Flange Shaft Seals

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Extractor Lever (VW 681)

• Plate from Puller (T10037)

• Thrust Piece (T10049)

• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)

• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)

Removing

Right Seal

- Remove the rear final drive. Refer to one of the following:

Golf R, refer to => [ Rear Final Drive ] Service and Repair.

Left Seal

- Remove the drive axle.

Continuation for Both Sides

Flange Shaft, Removing

- Install the plate - A - from the puller (T10037) onto the flange and tighten the two M8 x 30 bolts - 1 - hand tight.






The sections - arrows - for the larger flange diameter face outward.

- Tighten the bolts one turn each in an alternating sequence until the flange is in contact with the plate - arrows - and then stop tightening.







Wear gloves to get a good grip on the flange.

Drive the flange out of the final drive by tapping lightly on the plate - arrow -.







Only use a plastic mallet so the final drive and tool are not damaged.

- Pry out the flange shaft seal using the extractor lever (VW 681).






Installing

- Lightly lubricate the outer diameter of the new seal and install it until seated using the thrust piece (T10049). Be careful not to tilt it.






- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lips half way with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).

Lock Ring (Circlip) Replacing

- Clamp the flange shaft in a vise with jaw protectors.






- Use the new lock ring - A - to press the previous lock ring out of the flange shaft groove.

- Install the flange shaft using a plastic hammer and a drift.

Left Seal

- Install the drive axle.

Right Seal

- Install the rear final drive. Refer to one of the following:

Golf R, refer to => [ Rear Final Drive ] Service and Repair.

Continuation for All

- Check the oil level in the rear final drive. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Oil Level, Checking or Filling ] Rear Final Drive Oil Level, Checking or Filling.
