Engine Control Module, with Anti-Theft Protection
• If the Engine Control Module (ECM) will be replaced, connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and perform the guided function "Replacing Engine Control Module".
• The threads on the shear bolts may have locking compound on them. Heat the shear bolts using a hot air gun (VAS 1978/14) so they are easier to remove. Do not to damage any wires, connectors or components nearby when doing this.
Removing
- Turn off the ignition.
- Remove the windshield wiper arm.
- Remove the plenum chamber bulkhead.
- Press the frame downward in the - direction of the arrow - and remove the ECM.
- Remove the shear bolts - arrows - with the pliers.
- Slide the screwdriver between both of the locking plates - arrow -.
- Carefully press the screwdriver in the - direction of the arrow - and at the same time bend the securing bracket - 1 - upward.
- Bend the locking bracket - 1 - in the - direction of the arrow - until it can be removed from the connectors.
- Push the locking mechanism for the connector in the - direction of the arrow - and remove the connector.
Installing
- Connect the connector to the ECM and push the locking mechanism all the way until the stop in the - direction of the arrow -.
- Place the securing bracket - 1 - onto the connector and press it in the - direction of the arrow -.
- Guide the bolts - 2 - all the way into the opening on the ECM until they stop.
- Secure the locking bracket to the ECM with new shear bolts- arrows -.
- Tighten the shear bolts evenly until the bolt heads shear off.
- Place the ECM into the frame and press the frame upward in the - direction of the arrow -.
- Install the plenum chamber bulkhead.
- Install the windshield wiper arm.
