Drive Axle Overview, with CV Joint VL 107
1 Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint
• Replace only as a complete unit.
• Removing, refer to Drive Axle, CV Joint VL107.
• Installing: Drive onto the shaft until seated using a plastic hammer.
• Checking, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Outer CV Joint, Checking.
2 Bolt
• There are different versions.
• Allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.
• There are 2 types of twelve point bolts, with and without ribs.
• When installing a twelve point bolt, always check what type of twelve point bolt is to be used.
• Use the correct tightening specification for the specific bolt.
• The tightening specification for a twelve point bolt with ribs is 70 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn. For the loosening and tightening specifications, refer to => [ Drive Axle Bolt Loosening and Tightening, Twelve Point Bolt with Ribs ] Drive Axle Bolt Loosening and Tightening, Twelve Point Bolt with Ribs.
• The tightening specification for a twelve point bolt without ribs is 200 Nm + an additional 180° (1/2) turn. • Always replace if removed.
3 Lock Ring
• Always replace if removed.
• Insert in the shaft groove.
4 Thrust Ring
• Installed position, refer to => [ Installed position: Concave washer and thrust washer on the outer CV joint ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL100.
5 Concave Washer
• Installed position, refer to => [ Installed position: Concave washer and thrust washer on the outer CV joint ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL100.
6 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tightening the Hose Clamp for the Outer CV Joint ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL107.
7 Outer CV Joint Boot
• Check for tears and scuffing.
• Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer).
8 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tensioning the Small Diameter Clamp ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL107.
9 Axle Shaft
10 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tensioning the Small Diameter Clamp ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL100.
11 Inner CV Joint Boot
• Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer).
• Without a ventilation bore.
• Check for tears and scuffing.
• Drive off the CV joint boot using a drift.
• Before mounting onto the CV joint, coat the sealing surface using sealant (D 454 300 A2).
12 Clamp
• Always replace if removed.
13 Locking Plate
• Always replace if removed.
14 Cover
• Carefully drive off using a drift
• Before mounting onto CV joint, coat sealing surface using (D 454 300 A2)
• Adhesive surface must be free of oil and grease
15 Inner CV joint
• Replace only as complete unit
• Pressing off => [ Removing the Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL107
• Pressing on => [ Pressing on the Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL107
• Checking, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Inner CV Joint, Checking
16 Gasket
• Bonding surface on CV joint must be free of grease and oil!
17 Locking Ring
• Remove and install using circlip pliers (VW 161 A)
18 Cover
• Always replace if removed.
• Prying off, refer to => [ Drive Off the Cover for the Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle, CV Joint VL107.
19 Bolt
• First, tighten diagonally to 10 Nm, then tighten diagonally again to specification.
M8 bolt = 40 Nm
M10 bolt = 70 Nm
• After disassembly, always replace the bolts.
Differences Between a twelve Point Bolt With Ribs and Bolt Without Ribs
The contact surfaces - arrows A and B - are different on the two bolts.
