Outer CV Joint, Checking

Outer CV Joint, Checking

It is necessary to disassemble the Constant Velocity (CV) joint whenever replacing the grease or if the ball bearing surfaces show wear or damage.

Removing

- Mark the position of the ball hub to the ball cage and housing before disassembling, use a scribe or grindstone.

- Swivel the ball hub and ball cage.

- Remove the ball bearings one after the other.

- Turn the cage, until the two rectangular windows - arrow - contact the CV joint body.

- Lift out the cage with the hub.

- Swing the segment of the hub into the rectangular window of the cage.

- Fold the hub out from the cage.

6 ball bearings for each CV joint belong to a tolerance group. Check the stub axle, hub, cage and ball bearings for small depressions (pitting buildup) and chafing. Excessive circumferential backlash in the CV joint makes itself noticed via tip-in shock, in such cases the CV joint should be replaced. Flattening and running marks on the ball bearings are no reason to replace the CV joint.

Installing

- Press in half of the total grease amount (40 grams) into the CV joint body.

- Insert the cage with hub into the CV joint body.

- Press in the opposing ball bearings in sequence, during this, the previous position of the ball hub to the ball cage and to the CV joint body must be established again.

- Install new circlip into the hub.

- Distribute the remaining grease in the cover.

- Check the CV joint for proper function.

The CV joint is properly assembled, if the ball hub can be slid back and forth by hand over the whole compensation length.
