• Instrument cluster component functions can be checked using On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program function "Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".

The following components are integrated in the instrument cluster:

• Instrument cluster control module (J285)

• Tachometer (G5)

• Coolant temperature gauge (G3)

• Oil level thermal sensor (G266)

• Speedometer (G21)

• Outside air temperature sensor (G17)

• Fuel level sensor 2 (G169)

• Fuel gauge (G1)

• Fuel level sensor (G)

• Indicator lamps, refer to => [ Instrument Cluster Overview ] Instrument Cluster Overview.

All warning and indicator lamps are equipped with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which cannot be serviced or replaced separately. In the event of malfunctions, the complete instrument cluster must be replaced. Refer to => [ Instrument Cluster ] Instrument Cluster.

DTC Recognition and Display

The instrument cluster is equipped with On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities which assists with troubleshooting.

The "Guided Fault Finding" function is to be used for troubleshooting of one of the systems described as in => [ Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems ] Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems.

Replacing the Instrument Cluster

- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems ]Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems.

- On the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, select "Guided Fault Finding".

- Using the "GO TO" button, select "Functions/Component selection" and the following menu options in sequence:

• Body

• Electrical Equipment

• 01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems

• Instrument Cluster

• Instrument cluster functions

• Instrument Cluster, Removing and Installing

Coding the Instrument Cluster

- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems ] Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems.

- On the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, select "Guided Fault Finding".

- Using the "GO TO" button, select "Functions/Component selection" and the following menu options in sequence:

• Body

• Electrical Equipment

• 01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems

• Instrument Cluster

• Instrument cluster functions

• Instrument Cluster, Coding

Instrument Cluster Output Diagnostic Test Mode

The following components and functions can be checked via output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) of instrument cluster:

• Speedometer (G21)

• Tachometer (G5)

• Fuel gauge (G1)

• Coolant temperature gauge (G3)

• Supply voltage display (Y11)

• Instantaneous consumption display (Y10)

• Charge air pressure gauge (G30)

• Glow plug indicator lamp (K29)

• Anti-Theft engine disable indicator light (K115)

• Seat belt indicator lamp (K19)

• Brake and parking brake warning lamp (K7)

• Brake pad wear indicator lamp (K32)

• Low windshield washer fluid level indicator lamp (K106)

• Low fuel level indicator lamp (K105)

• Oil pressure indicator lamp (K3)

• Oil Level Indicator Lamp (K38)

• Engine coolant level/temperature (ECL/ECT) warning lamp (K28)

• Oil pressure warning buzzer (H11)

• Warning buzzer (H3) (activation of gong in instrument cluster)

• Flasher acoustic (activation of flasher relay)

• Segment test (during segment test, all segments of display unit are activated. For this, the display will be activated in sequence in the colors white, red, green and blue.)

• Checkerboard pattern

• Inverted checkerboard pattern

Service Interval Display, Resetting

- Resetting Service Reminder Indicator (SRI).

• Above system/component checks depend on market version and installed equipment.

- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems ] Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information Systems.

- On the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, select "Guided Fault Finding".

- Using the "GO TO" button, select "Functions/Component selection" and the following menu options in sequence:

• Instrument Cluster

• Instrument cluster functions
