Subframe Bonded Rubber Bushings
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Tensioning Strap (T10038)
• Locating Pins (T10096)
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Hydraulic Press (VAS 6178)
• Pressure Head (T10205/13)
• Pneumatic/Hydraulic Foot Pump (VAS 6179)
• Assembly Tool (T10356)
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Remove the coil springs. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.
- Disconnect the electric connections between the rear subframe and the body.
- Remove the stabilizer bar. Refer to => [ Stabilizer Bar ] Stabilizer Bar.
- Now, secure vehicle on both sides to the hoist arms using the tensioning strap (T10038).
If the vehicle is not secured, it could slide off of hoist.
- Place the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with the universal transmission support (V.A.G 1359/2) below the subframe and secure with the strap.
- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - on both sides of the vehicle.
• Only the left side of the vehicle is shown in the illustration.
To locate the subframe, the locating pins (T10096) must be installed one after the other on both sides of the vehicle at positions - 1 and 2 -.
- Locate the position of the subframe using the locating pins (T10096).
• The locating pins (T10096) may only be tightened to a maximum of 20 Nm, otherwise the threads of the locating pins will be damaged.
- Replace the subframe bolts one after the other on both sides with the locating pins (T10096) and tighten the pins to 20 Nm.
The position of the subframe is now secured.
- Lower the subframe approximately 10 cm using the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
Front Bonded Rubber Bushing, Removing
- Install the special tools as shown in the illustration.

- Pretension the special tools.
- Remove the bonded rubber bushing by operating the pump.
• The bushing outer race is sheared off when the bonded rubber bushing is removed. There is a loud crack when this happens.
• After removing the bonded rubber bushing, it must be removed from the tube (T10356/2) by tapping lightly with a hammer.
Front Bonded Rubber Bushing, Installing
- Install the special tools with the bonded rubber bushing into the subframe as illustrated.

- Pretension the special tools with the bonded rubber bushing.
- Carefully insert the bonded rubber bushing by operating the pump until the collar lies on the subframe without a gap.
Rear Bonded Rubber Bushing, Removing
- Install the special tools as shown in the illustration.

- Pretension the special tools.
- Remove the bonded rubber bushing by operating the pump.
• The bushing outer race is sheared off when the bonded rubber bushing is removed. There is a loud crack when this happens.
• After removing the bonded rubber bushing, it must be removed from the tube (T10356/2) by tapping lightly with a hammer.
Rear Bonded Rubber Bushing, Installing
- Install the special tools with the bonded rubber bushing into the subframe as illustrated.

- Pretension the special tools with the bonded rubber bushing.
- Carefully insert the bonded rubber bushing by operating the pump until the collar lies on the subframe without a gap.
Further installation is in the reverse order of removal. Note the following when doing so:
- Bleed the brake system.
Tightening Specifications
