Subframe, with the Steering Gear
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Ball Joint Puller (3287 A)
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
Removing
- Remove the battery and the battery tray.
- Remove the nut - 1 - and wire from the E-box.
- Disconnect the connector - 1 -.
- Remove the cap nut and ground cable
- Open the cover - 2 -
- Remove the wiring harness from the bracket on the longitudinal member so that it can be removed together with the steering gear.
- Remove the drivers foot well trim retainers - arrows - and trim.
- Remove the universal joint bolt - 1 - and separate the universal joint - 2 - from the steering gear.
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the lower noise insulation.
- Disconnect the connector for the oil level sensor thermal sensor, if equipped.
- Remove the exhaust system suspended mount bolts - arrows - from the subframe.
- Remove the coupling rods from the stabilizer bar.
- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows -.
- Loosen the tie rod nuts at the wheel bearing housings, but do not remove them yet.
To protect the threads, leave the nuts on the stud a few turns.
- Press off the tie rod ends from wheel bearing housings using the ball joint puller (3287 A) and then remove the nuts.
- Remove the pendulum support bolts - 13 -.
- Secure the subframe. Refer to => [ Subframe, Securing ] Subframe, Securing.
- Place the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) under the subframe.
- Place a block of wood - 1 -, between the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and the subframe.
- Remove the subframe bolts - 9 and 10 - and slightly lower the subframe. Observe the electrical wires when doing this.
- Lower the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and guide the steering gear wiring harness back.
- Secure the subframe on the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with the accompanying strap.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal.
- Install the battery tray and the battery.
- Install the wheels. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specifications ] [1][2]Specifications.
- Install the noise insulation.
