Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling
Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling
Note the Following Information:
• Regarding the repair information, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
• Regarding the transmission fluid, refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid ] Automatic Transmission Fluid.
• It may be necessary to use the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262/6) on some oil bottles.
• It may be necessary to shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
Shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) as follows:
- Shorten the pipe to 210 mm - a -. This assures the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) will not touch the bottom of some oil bottles.
• Dimension - a - is measured starting from the shaft (green surface) on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
- Shorten the pipe using the pipe cutter (VAS 6056/2).
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A)
• Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262/6)
Use the transmission fluid available as a replacement part. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
- When checking the transmission fluid level, always replace the seal - arrow - on the plug.
Checking
- Turn off the engine.
The transmission fluid temperature must not be more than approximately 30 °C (86 °F) at the start of the test.
• Transmission is not in the emergency running mode, and the fluid temperature is not higher than 30 °C (86 °F).
• The vehicle is horizontal.
• The selector level is in the "P" position.
- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and move through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, Connecting ] Testing and Inspection.
- Press Guided Functions.
- Select the vehicle, the transmission and check ATF level.
- Press the -> button.
- Start the engine.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Place the drip tray for VAS 6100 or the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.
- Press the -> button.
If the test temperature shown is 35 to 45 °C (86 to 113 °F):
- Remove the plug from the transmission pan - arrow -.
Transmission fluid flows out of the overflow tube.
If the fluid continues to leak out of the hole:
The transmission fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Tighten the plug with a new seal to 27 Nm. The fluid level test is now completed.
If no fluid leaks out of the hole:
- Fill the transmission fluid.
Filling
• Place the drip tray for VAS 6100 or the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.
- Install the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2) into the transmission fluid pan hand tight, while the engine is running.
- Shake the fluid bottles before opening.
- Connect the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the bottle. Be sure to read the instructions.
- Connect the oil filler adapter (VAS 6262 A) to the quick release coupling on the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2) :
- Fill with 1 liter fluid.
If fluid leaks out of the plug hole:
The fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it drips.
- Install and tighten the plug with a new seal to 27 Nm. The fluid level test is now completed.
If fluid does not leak out:
- Fill with another liter of fluid.
Too little or too much fluid will impair the transmission. If 2 liters are missing, you should check the transmission more closely. There is probably a larger leak.
