Crankshaft Radial Play, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Plastigage(R)
Conditions
• Do not rotate the crankshaft when checking the radial clearance.
Test Sequence
• Do not interchange used bearings.
• Bearing shells that are worn down to the nickel layer must be replaced.
- Remove the main bearing cap and clean the bearing cap and pins.
- Place Plastigage(R) over the entire width of the bearing journal or into the bearing shell.
• The Plastigage(R) must rest in the center of the bearing shell.
- Install and tighten the main bearing cap. Do not rotate the crankshaft while doing this.
- Remove the main bearing cap again.
- Compare the width of the Plastigage(R) with the measuring scale.
Radial clearance:
• New: 0.023 to 0.043 mm
• Wear limit: 0.07 mm
