Shift Mechanism, Adjusting

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Trim Removal Wedge (3409)
• Connecting Pin (T10027 A)
• The following is important, in order to make sure the shift adjustment is correct:
• Operating and transfer elements of the shift mechanism must be in proper working condition.
• The shift mechanism must move freely.
• The transmission, clutch and clutch mechanism must also be in proper working condition.
• Transmission is in neutral.
Perform the following:
- Remove the air filter housing.
- Pull the locking mechanism on the cable retainers for the shift and selector cables all the way forward in the - direction of arrow 1 - and then lock them to the left in the - direction of arrow 2 -.
• The cables must slide in the cable retainer.
• Transmission is in neutral.
Secure the gear shift shaft as follows:
- Push the gear shift shaft down in the - direction of arrow 1 -.
- While press the gear shift shaft down, rotate the locking pin - A - in the - direction of arrow 2 - upward and simultaneously in the - direction of arrow 2 - press it in until it engages in the gear shift shaft.
- Unclip the boot - B - and frame from the center console using the trim removal wedge (3409).
- Fold the boot and frame upward over the shift knob - A -.
- Pull the noise insulation - 1 -, if equipped, slightly upward so that the connecting pin (T10027 A) can be inserted.
Secure the shift lever as follows:
- Move the shift lever into neutral.
- Insert the connecting pin (T10027 A) through hole - A - and into hole - B -.
• The noise insulation is not shown in the illustration.
• It must be possible to move the selector and shift cables - B - in the cable retainers - A -.
- Turn the locking mechanism on the cable retainers for the shift and selector cables all the way to the right in the - direction of arrow 1 -.
The spring will push the locking mechanism into the starting position in the - direction of arrow 2 -.
- Then, turn the locking pin - A - in the - direction of the arrow - back into it starting position.
• The locking pin - A - must get pushed out of the transmission in the - direction of arrow 1 -.
- Pull the connecting pin out of the holes - A and B -.
- If equipped, install the noise insulation - 1 -.
- Install the shift knob boot into the center console.
- Make sure the shift lever moves easily.
- Install the complete air filter housing.
Function
• The shift lever must rest in the 3rd/4th gear lever gate when the transmission is in neutral.
- Press the clutch pedal.
- Move the shift lever several times through all the gears. Pay particular attention to the operation of the reverse gear lock.
- Should a gear fail to engage smoothly after repeated selection, adjust the shift mechanism again. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
