Clutch Cover, Removing
Short Description
The cover seals the transmission from the outside. A circlip holds the cover is place. Remove the circlip and pry out the cover. Always replace the cover and the circlip. Never use a hammer to install the cover and never lubricate the center seal or touch it. If this should occur, the cover will certainly leak!
The transmission must be removed in order to work on the cover.
- Remove the transmission, refer to the following:
Vehicle with a gas engine, refer to => [ Transmission, Removing ] Transmission, Removing.
- Secure the transmission to the assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Transporting and Securing to the Assembly Stand ] Transmission, Transporting and Securing to the Assembly Stand.
- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) or a drip tray under the transmission.
- Remove the transmission oil drain and inspection plug - arrow - and drain the transmission oil.
A plastic overflow tube is located in this hole (with a 8 mm hex socket head, tightening specification: 3 Nm).
- Remove this overflow tube and drain the transmission oil.
• Approximately 5.0 liters of transmission oil will drain. Leave the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) or the drip tray under the transmission.
- Tighten the overflow tube to 3 Nm.
- Install the transmission oil drain and inspection plug with a new seal - arrow -.
Tightening specification: 45 Nm
- If it is necessary, remove the filter.
There are often uncertainties as to whether the filter must be replaced or not.

- Install the new filter with the collar - arrow - facing down and tighten the filter housing to 20 Nm.
- After repairs are complete, you do not have to change filter again when filling the oil.
Remove the cover.
- Remove the circlip from the cover.
Pry out the cover using a screwdriver - arrow -.
Only install a new cover. Refer to => [ Clutch Cover, Installing ] Clutch Cover, Installing.
