Condenser
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Robinair A/C Service Unit (-ROB 134APF-) or newer model
• Engine Bung Set (VAS 6122)
There is a danger of ice-up.
Refrigerant leaks out if refrigerant circuit is not discharged.
Refrigerant must be extracted before opening the refrigerant circuit. If the refrigerant circuit is not opened within 10 minutes after extracting it, pressure may build up in the circuit again. The refrigerant must be extracted again.
Removing
• Extract the refrigerant using the (-ROB 134APF-).
• Environmentally hazardous draining of refrigerant is an offense punishable by law.
• See notes, refer to => [ Repairing Vehicles Equipped with A/C and Handling Refrigerants ] Repairing Vehicles Equipped with A/C and Handling Refrigerants.
• To prevent the entry of dampness all components of the refrigerant circuit which have been opened must be sealed with suitable plugs.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Drain the refrigerant with the (-ROB 134APF-) from the coolant circuit.
- Remove the noise insulation under the engine.
- Remove the front bumper.
- Remove the front, left and right air guides from the lock carrier.
- Remove the radiator fan (V7) and radiator fan 2 (V177) with the fan shroud.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - for the refrigerant lines - 3 - and - 4 - on the condenser-block connection - 2 - (to 12 Nm).
- Remove the refrigerant lines - 3 - and - 4 - from the condenser-block connection - 2 -.
- Seal the refrigerant lines - 3 - and - 4 - with the (VAS 6122).
- Seal the condenser-block connection - 2 - with the (VAS 6122).
- Remove the condenser bolts - 2 - (5 Nm) on the radiator.
- Remove the radiator bolts - 1 - (5 Nm) on the lock carrier.
- Remove the radiator - 2 - from the bottom of the lock carrier.
- Tilt the condenser - 3 - and the radiator - 2 - downward in the - direction of the arrow A - towards to the engine.
- Remove the condenser - 3 - from the lock carrier - 1 - downward in the - direction of the arrow B -.
- Insert the radiator - 2 - back into the lock carrier - 1 -.
• Carefully remove the condenser - 3 - and the radiator - 2 - in order to avoid damaging the radiator blades on both of the components.
• Perform work with the help of a 2nd mechanic.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order while observing the following:
• Moisten the new refrigerant line seals with refrigerant oil before installing.
• If the condenser has been replaced, only open the connections on the condenser-block connection prior to installation.
• Only remove the connections from the (VAS 6122) on the refrigerant lines prior to installation.
