Drive Axle Overview, with CV Joint VL100






1 Outer CV Joint

• Replace only as complete unit.

• Removing, refer to => [ Removing the Outer CV Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

• Installing: Drive onto shaft until impact using plastic hammer.

• Checking, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Outer CV Joint, Checking.

2 Bolt

• 200 Nm + 90° turn

• Always replace if removed.

• Bolt, loosening and tightening, refer to => [ Wheel bearings must not be burdened when drive axle connection is loose. ] Drive Axle with Tripod Joint AAR3300i.

3 Right Drive Axle

4 Clamp

• Always replace if removed.

• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tensioning Clamp on Small Diameter ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

5 Protective Boot

• Check for tears and scuffing.

• Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer).

6 Clamp

• Always replace if removed.

• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tightening Hose Clamp On Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

7 Dished Washer

• Installed position, refer to => [ Installed Location of Spring Washer and Thrust Washer on Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

8 Thrust Washer

• Installed position, refer to => [ Installed Location of Spring Washer and Thrust Washer on Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

9 Securing Ring

• Always replace if removed.

• Insert in shaft groove.

10 CV Boot

• Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer).

• Without ventilation bore.

• Check for tears and scuffing.

• Drive off CV joint using drift.

• Before mounting onto CV joint, coat sealing surface using (D 454 300 A2).

11 Clamp

• Always replace if removed.

• Tensioning, refer to => [ Tightening Hose Clamp On Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

12 Left Drive Axle

13 Backing Plate

14 Bolt

• Pre-tighten diagonally to 10 Nm, then tighten diagonally again to the tightening specification.

M8 bolt: 40 Nm

M10 bolt: 70 Nm

• Always replace bolts after disassembly.

15 Securing Ring

• Remove and install using snap ring pliers (VW 161 A).

16 Gasket

• Bonding surface on CV joint must be free of grease and oil!

17 Inner CV Joint

• Replace only as complete unit.

• Pressing off, refer to => [ Removing the Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

• Pressing on, refer to => [ Pressing On Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.

• Checking, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Inner CV Joint, Checking.

18 Dished Washer

• Installed position, refer to => [ Assembling ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL100.
