Front Passenger Airbag Unit

Front Passenger Airbag Unit

The general safety precautions for working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnic components) must be observed. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.

Observe the special information regarding driver and front passenger airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to => [ Glove Compartment ] Glove Compartment.

Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the chassis or door striker pin.

- Disconnect the wiring harness - 1 - from the front passenger airbag unit.

Vehicles with Dual Stage Airbag Units

- Disconnect the wiring harness - 2 - from the front passenger airbag unit.

Procedure for All Vehicles

- Remove the clip - arrow - from the mount - 3 -.

- Remove the screws - 2 - from the bracket - 3 - (9 Nm).

- Remove the bolts - 3 - (9 Nm) and the front passenger airbag unit - 4 - from the frame - 1 -.

Clip the front passenger side airbag unit mount - 2 - to the frame - 1 -.

- Unclip the bracket - 2 - and remove it from the frame - 1 -.

Installation

- Install in reverse order of removal.

If the housing for the front passenger airbag unit - 4 - is plastic, then use locking compound D 197 300 A2 when installing the screws - 3 - (9 Nm).

Check whether an additional ground cable must be routed in vehicle:

If a passenger airbag is replaced, an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle in some cases.

The example shows a single-stage airbag unit. For dual-stage airbag modules, the evaluation as to whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle is done similarly.

- Check whether a ground cable is routed on the passenger airbag housing:

With a passenger airbag with ground line - 1 -, the wiring harness - 2 - is a three-conductor harness, and in addition, another cable - 3 - is secured on the threaded pins - 4 -.

With a passenger airbag without ground line - 5 -, the wiring harness - 6 - is a two-connector harness and no additional cable is secured on the threaded pins - 7 -.

If front passenger airbag does not have a ground wire, then route an additional ground wire inside vehicle:

For the following procedure, use a cable (cross section 1 mm, length 600 mm) from the Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978) or Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978A).

- Secure end of ground line with bolt - 1 - on right side of passenger airbag.

- Route ground line correctly to right side of passenger footwell.

If necessary, lengthen the ground cable with suitable instruments from the Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978) or Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978A).

- Attach the other end of the ground cable to the ground pin - 2 -.

- Turn on the ignition.

Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect the battery.
