Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Engine/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Bits (T10099)
• Wheel Hub Support (T10149)
• Ball Joint Puller (T10187)
Removing
• During assembly work, make sure that no indentations form on the protective boot of the air spring shock absorber!
- Remove the engine compartment cover.
Right Steel Spring Shock Absorber in Vehicles with a Diesel Engine
- Remove the fuel filter over the air spring shock absorber.
Left Steel Spring Shock Absorber in Vehicles with a Hybrid Drive
- Unclip the lines - 1 - from the brackets - arrows -.
- Remove the nuts - arrows - and press the bracket - 1 - to the side.
Continuation for All Vehicles
- Unscrew the nuts - arrows - and remove the ring - 2 -.
- Loosen the wheel bolts.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the wheel.
Vehicles with Dynamic Headlamp Range Control
- Pull the pin - 2 - for the left front level control system sensor/right front level control sensor (G78/G289) downward and unclip the coupling rod at the upper control arm.
Continuation for All Vehicles
- Disconnect the drive axle from the front final drive.
- Remove the upper brake line bracket - 1 - from the wheel bearing housing - arrow -.
- Pull the harness connector - 1 - and cable out of the bracket - 3 -.
- Remove the bolt - 2 - and the lower line hose bracket - 3 - from the wheel bearing housing.
- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on top.
- Install the (T10149) using a wheel bolt.
- Support the wheel bearing housing.
- Loosen the nut on the conical pin, but do not unscrew yet.
To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.
- Press out the upper control arm and unscrew the nut.

- Tilt the wheel bearing housing with the (T10149) and the (V.A.G 1383 A) outward.
- Unscrew the threaded connection - 1 -.
- Unscrew the bolt - 1 - for the air spring shock absorber - 2 - on the control arm.
- Press the upper control arm upward, press the air spring shock absorber together and remove.
Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, with special attention to the following:
- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Torque Specification ] [1][2]Specifications.
Tightening Specifications
