Dryer Cartridge
Dryer Cartridge
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Robinair A/C Service Unit (ROB 134APF)
• Extract the refrigerant using the (ROB 134APF).
• See notes, refer to => [ Refrigerant Circuit Components in Engine Compartment, Servicing ] Refrigerant Circuit Components in Engine Compartment, Servicing.
• Under certain conditions, the dryer cartridge should no longer be replaced each time the refrigerant circuit is opened.
Function of fluid reservoir with dryer cartridge
The receiver collects the fluid drops and then directs them in an uninterrupted stream to the expansion valve. Moisture which has entered the refrigerant circuit during repairs will be collected by the dryer cartridge in the reservoir.
Hybrid vehicles have a high voltage system. Danger of electrical shock! It will also be necessary to work on the high voltage system when performing the following procedures. Switch off the high voltage system.
Removal
Additional work for vehicles with a TDI engine
- Loosen the right upper charge air hose.
Additional work for hybrid vehicles
Hybrid vehicles have a high voltage system. Danger of electrical shock! It will also be necessary to work on the high voltage system when performing the following procedures. Switch off the high voltage system.
- Remove the coolant reservoir and move it to the side.
Continued for all engines
- Remove the license plate holder - 2 - and the center air guide grille - 3 -.
- Fold up the air guide on the left and right - arrow - and remove the screws - A - (25 Nm).
- Push the radiator toward the engine and remove the clips - arrows - on top of the radiator.
- Push the locking pins - B - in both radiator mounts- A - in - direction of arrow - and remove them.
- Push the radiator carefully toward the engine compartment and secure it.
Danger due to refrigerant coming out under pressure.
Danger of frost bite to skin and other parts of the body.
• Extract the refrigerant and immediately open the refrigerant circuit after that.
• If the refrigerant was extracted more than 10 minutes in the past and the refrigerant circuit was not opened, extract the refrigerant again. Pressure in the refrigerant circuit is caused by evaporation.
- Extract refrigerant from the refrigerant circuit, using, for example, the (ROB 134APF). Then open the refrigerant circuit.
- Remove the cover - 1 - (12 ± 2 Nm).
- Remove the dryer cartridge - 2 - in - direction of arrow - using needle nose pliers.
Installation
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- If necessary, clean upper area of inside surface of fluid reservoir - B - and coat it lightly with refrigerant oil.
- Replace the cover - A - and O-rings - C -. Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).
- Coat the O-rings - C - on the new cover - A - lightly with refrigerant oil before installing.
- Install the new dryer cartridge - D -. Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).
The high voltage system must be turned off when charging the refrigerant circuit.
• Do not install any dryer cartridge that has been exposed to the air longer than absolutely necessary because it will have absorbed moisture from the air. This includes cartridges that were not stored in their original packaging or whose packaging is damaged.
• A dryer cartridge that is exposed to the air becomes saturated with moisture quickly and becomes unusable.
- A second technician will be needed to install the radiator bolts.
- Perform remaining installation operations in reverse order of removal.
