- Lift the vehicle, all 4 lift points of the hoist are at the same height.

- Turn the steering to the center position.

- Remove the ignition key and engage the steering wheel lock.

- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.

- Press the brake and remove the drive axle bolt - arrow -. A second technician will be needed.

Do not place the vehicle on the floor after loosening the bolt.

- Disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission - 1 - and pull it out of the bracket - 2 -.

Be careful not to bend the cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise the retainers on the cable bracket may break off.

- Pry the cable off the selector shaft lever - 3 - ball head using a open end wrench - 2 -.

- Disconnect the following/all electrical connections to transmission and starter that are easily accessible from above.

- Remove the nut - 1 - from the top of the wire bracket - 2 -.

- Then, remove all upper engine/transmission bolts - arrows -.

- Lift the vehicle.

- Remove the noise insulation.

If necessary:

- Disconnect the connector from the left front level control system sensor (G78).

- Remove the ball joint to lower control arm nuts - arrows - on both side of the vehicle.

- Remove the drive axles from the transmission.

- Remove the left drive axle.

- Secure the right drive axle up as high as possible to the strut.

- Remove the pendulum support, first remove the bolt - A -, and then the bolts - B -.

- Remove the plug - arrow -.

- Remove the six torque converter bolts - arrow - through the opening using the socket SW15 (V/175). Counter hold the starter ring gear with a screwdriver.

The engine is rotated at the ribbed belt pulley using commercially available tools.

- Remove all easily accessible bolts between the engine and transmission except for one.

- Lower the vehicle.

- Install the engine support bridge (10-222 A).

- To prevent warping when loosening and tightening the transmission mount, arrange the left and right brackets with spindles and hooks (10-222 A/10) as follows:

Left (Transmission Side):

- Align the adapter (10-222 A/18) on the engine support bridge (10-222 A) so the spindle hook engages vertically in the lifting eye on the engine.

The spindle is on an angle, the upper end points toward the center of the vehicle.

Right (Engine Side):

- Hold the M10 nut - arrow - under the engine mount. Insert the lifting eyebolt (3368) through the engine mount. Install the nut approximately 8 turns on the eye bolt.

- Install the shackle (10-222 A/12) on the eye bolt.

- Engage the bracket with spindle and hook (10-222 A/10) in the shackle and align the spindle vertically.

- To stabilize the engine support bridge, first counter turn the spindle and then tighten it about 6 turns.

From this point on, only the left spindle (transmission side) is rotated.

- Support the engine and transmission. Do not lift up yet.

- Remove the transmission mount to transmission mount bracket bolts - 1 -.

- Remove the transmission mount bracket - 2 - to transmission bolts.

- Lower the engine/transmission assembly by rotating the left spindle approximately 6 turns.

- Remove the transmission mount bracket - 2 -.

- Align the transmission support (3282) with the adjusting plate (3282/56).

- Guide the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) under the transmission and support the transmission. Do not lift.

The transmission is disconnected from the engine in this position.

- Remove the last engine/transmission bolt.

- Carefully drain the transmission, ensure there is clearance to other components.

Be careful of the transmission fluid lines when lowering the transmission.

- You should have permanently attached the transmission's diagnostic protocol for analysis to the transmission ready for shipment.
