Front Wheel Drive






Wheel Bearing Housing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Removing

- Remove the wheel.

- Remove the coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

- Remove the wheel hub with bearing. Refer to => [ Wheel Hub with Bearing ] Wheel Hub with Bearing.

- Remove the cover plate.

- Remove the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor from the wheel bearing housing.

- Remove the shock absorber lower bolt - arrow - from the wheel bearing housing.






- Remove the tie rod bolt - 1 -, nut and washers. Remove the upper track control arm - 2 - bolt, nut and washers, and remove the lower track control arm - 3 - bolt and nut from the wheel bearing housing - 4 -.






- Remove the coupling rod nut - arrow - from the wheel bearing housing.

- Hold the wheel bearing housing tightly and remove the trailing arm bolts - arrows -.






- Pull the coupling rod - 1 - out of the trailing arm/wheel bearing housing.

Installing

The threaded connections of the trailing arm/wheel bearing housing must only be tightened when all other components of the respective wheel suspension have been already assembled. To tighten, the suspension must be unloaded. Only now do the trailing arm and wheel bearing housing move into the position required - arrows -.






Always perform the following work in the sequence given!

- Install the tie rod - 1 - bolt, washers and nut, the upper track control arm bolt - 2 -, washers and nut and the lower track control arm bolt - 3 - and, but do not tighten.






- Install the trailing arm and bolts - arrows - and install the coupling rod - 1 - into the trailing arm.






- Install the coupling rod - 1 - nut and tighten the nut hand tight.

- Install and tighten shock absorber to wheel bearing housing bolt - arrow -.






Fastener tightening at the wheel bearing housing may occur only when dimension "a" has been obtained. Refer to => [ Tightening of the respective bolts/nuts must then only occur after dimension between the wheel hub center and the lower edge of the wheel housing has been attained. ] Rear Subframe!

- Install the coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

- Tighten the tie rod bolt - 1 -, the upper track control arm bolt - 2 - and the lower track control arm bolt - 3 -.






- Tighten the coupling rod nut - arrow -.

- Tighten the trailing arm bolts - arrows -.






Vehicles with a wheel bearing front seal






When installing the wheel bearing front seal - 1 -, make sure the hole - arrow - is installed at the center of the speed sensor - 2 -.

Continuation for All

- Install the cover plate.

- Install wheel hub with bearing.

- Install ABS wheel speed sensor to the wheel bearing housing.

- Install brake rotor.

- Install the brake carrier and brake caliper.

- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specifications ] [1][2]Specifications.
