Starter
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Spring-type Clip Pliers (VAS 5024)
Removing
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.
- Loosen spring clamp - 1 - using (VAS 5024) and disconnect connector - 2 -.
- Disengage retaining lug - arrow - and remove cover in - direction of arrow -.
- Release the retaining tabs - arrows - and remove the air duct forward in the - direction of the arrow - from the retainer.
- Remove air filter housing mounting bolt - arrow -.
- Pull the air filter housing up from the rubber mounting.
- Remove air filter housing from vehicle.
- Remove the air filter housing bracket bolts - arrows -.
- Remove the air filter housing bracket from the vehicle.
- Disengage harness connector - 2 - of terminal 50 and disconnect harness connector.
- Slide the cap off the solenoid switch - 1 - in - direction of arrow -.
- Remove the nut - 2 - and set aside the positive wire - 1 -.
- Unclip the cap on the wiring bracket - 2 - and loosen the wire - 1 - from the cap.
- Remove the nut - 3 - from upper mounting bolt of starter.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Unclip the cap on the wiring bracket - 1 - and loosen the wire - 2 - from the cap.
- Remove the nut - 2 - and the wiring bracket - 1 - upward from the starter bolts.
- Remove lower mounting bolt for starter - arrow -.
- Disengage harness connector - arrow - and disconnect harness connector.
- Remove the nut - arrow - and move the ground wire - 1 - aside.
• To prevent damage from corrosion, do not remove Ground (GND) wire from GND point on body.
- Remove upper mounting bolt for starter - arrow -.
- Remove starter upward and out of vehicle.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Tighten the threaded connections to the specification shown in => [ Starter Overview ] Starter Overview.
