FWD
Rear Subframe
• Welding and straightening work on supporting or wheel carrying components of the suspension is not permitted.
• Always replace self-locking nuts.
• Always replace corroded bolts/nuts.
• Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Therefore, only tighten bolts on components with bonded rubber bushings when the wheel bearing housing is lifted (curb weight position). Refer to => [ Rear Subframe ] Rear Subframe.
• Always replace bonded rubber bushings on both sides of the vehicle.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
Removing
- Remove the wheels.
- Remove the coil springs. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.
- Disconnect the electric connections between the rear subframe and the body.
- Remove the shock absorber lower bolt - arrow - from the wheel bearing housing.
- Disconnect the brake lines - 1 and 2 -.
- Disconnect the parking brake connectors from the brake caliper.
- Remove the retainer - 1 - by pressing out the inner pins - arrows A -.
- Remove the wire - 1 - from the trailing arm bracket - arrow A -.
- Mark the installed position of the trailing arm bracket - 2 - to the body.
- Remove the trailing arm bracket bolts - B arrows -.
- Disconnect the left rear level control system sensor connector.
- Now, secure the vehicle on both sides, to the hoist arms using the tensioning strap (T10038).
If the vehicle is not secured, it could slide off of the hoist.
- Place the engine-/gearbox jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with the universal transmission support (V.A.G 1359/2) below the subframe and secure with the strap.
- Loosen the subframe bolts - 1 and 2 - on both sides of the vehicle.
• Only the left side of the vehicle is shown in the illustration.
To locate the subframe, the locating pins (T10096) must be installed one after the other on both sides of the vehicle at positions - 1 and 2 -.
- Location the position of the subframe using the locating pins (T10096).
• The locating pins (T10096) may only be tightened to a maximum of 20 Nm, otherwise the threads of the locating pins will be damaged.
- Replace the subframe bolts one after the other on both sides with the locating pins (T10096) and tighten the pins to 20 Nm.
The position of the subframe is now secured.
- Carefully lower the subframe.
• When lowering, ensure the brake lines and electrical wires have sufficient clearance.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following when doing so:
- When installing the wires for the electrical parking brake, make sure the dimension - a - between the connector - 1 - and the retainer - 2 - is exact.
Dimension - a - = 150 mm
- Bleed the brake system.
