Upper Oil Pan






Upper Oil Pan

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hand Drill with Plastic Brush Attachment

Silicone Adhesive Sealant (D 176 501)

Removing





- Remove the engine. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.

- Separate the engine and transmission. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing from Scissor Lift Table ] Engine, Removing from Scissor Lift Table.

- Secure the engine to the assembly stand. Refer to => [ Engine, Securing to Assembly Stand ] Engine, Securing to Assembly Stand.

- Remove the drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the shim behind it.

- Remove the timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Timing Chain Covers ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the oil pump and balance shaft chain. Refer to => [ Balance Shaft and Oil Pump Chain ] Balance Shaft and Oil Pump Chain.

- Remove the sealing flange, belt pulley side. Refer to => [ Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the lower oil pan. Refer to => [ Lower Oil Pan ] Lower Oil Pan.

- Remove the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Oil Pump.

- Remove the upper oil pan bolts - 1 through 4 -.





- Press the upper oil pan from the alignment pins in the cylinder block.

Installing

Replace gaskets, seals and O-rings.

- Remove the sealant from the grooves in the upper oil pan and from the sealing surfaces.

CAUTION!
Wear safety glasses.

- Remove any remaining sealant from the oil pan using a drill with a rotating brush attachment (wear protective glasses).





- Clean the sealing surfaces so they are completely free of any oil or grease.

- Cut the tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter approximately 3 mm).





- Insert the seals - 1 and 2 - to the upper oil pan.





- Apply the sealant beads - arrows - to the clean sealing surface on the upper oil pan as illustrated.

The grooves - arrows - of sealing surfaces must be completely filled with sealant.

The sealant beads must be 1.5 to 2.0 mm above the sealing surface.

The sealant bead must not be thicker than specified or sealant could enter the oil pan and clog the oil pump strainer.

The upper oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of sealant.

- Position the upper oil pan in place and tighten the bolts - 1 through 4 - to 5 Nm in a diagonal sequence.





- Tighten the bolts - 1 through 4 - in a diagonal sequence.

Further installation is performed in reverse order.
