Brake Pads
Brake Pads
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Piston Resetting Tool (T10145)
• When removing, mark the brake pads in case they will be reused. Install them in the same position, otherwise braking effect will be uneven!
Removing
- Remove the wheel.
- Disconnect the connector - 1 - for the brake pad wear indicator.
- Remove the cap - 2 - and remove the brake pad wear indicator wire.
- Remove the tension strut bolt.
- Press the retaining spring down - arrow - and remove the tension strut - 1 - at the same time.
- Pull the wire for the brake pad wear indicator - arrows - out of the brake caliper housing and out of the retaining spring - 1 -.
- Remove the retaining spring.
Before pressing the brake pads back, extract some brake fluid from the reservoir using a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, especially if the reservoir has been topped off, fluid will overflow and cause damage.
- Press the brake pads off the brake disc and remove them from the brake caliper.
- If brake pads are to be replaced, carefully remove the contact sensor with the brake pad wear indicator wire from the brake pads and check for damage.
Reuse undamaged contact sensors and wires.
Cleaning
CAUTION!
Do not blow on the brake system with compressed air, the brake dust produced is harmful to your health!
- Clean the brake caliper.
Use only appropriate solvents for cleaning the brake caliper.
Installing
• Before pressing the pistons into the cylinders using the (T10145), brake fluid must be extracted from the brake fluid reservoir. Otherwise, especially if the reservoir has been topped off, fluid will overflow and cause damage.
- Press the pistons in.
- Carefully install the brake pad wear indicator wire contact sensor to the new brake pads.
- Install the brake pads into the brake caliper.
- Install the retaining spring - 1 -.
- Install the wire for the brake pad wear indicator below the tab on the retaining spring - 1 - and in the brake caliper housing - arrows -.
- Press the retaining spring down - arrow - and press the tension strut - 1 - in until seated.
Make sure the flat side surfaces of the tension strut are properly seated in the brake caliper housing in order to prevent the tension strut from twisting.
- Install the tension strut bolt.
- Connect the connector - 1 - for the brake pad wear indicator.
- Secure the brake pad wear indicator wire with the cap - 2 - on the bleeder valve.
- Install the wheel.
• After replacing the brake pads, firmly press the brake pedal several times with the vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
• Check the brake fluid level after replacing the brake pads.
