Airbag
CAUTION!
• Advanced airbags of passenger side in New Beetle sedan or convertible which only partially deployed, can cause severe injuries when second stage suddenly deploys.
• When working with airbag systems and transporting airbag units that have not deployed or have not completely deployed, strictly follow safety precautions.
• Never dispose of advanced passenger side airbag units of New Beetle sedan or convertible in waste or together with other materials to be scrapped.
Driver Airbag Unit
Removal
- Switch off the ignition.
- Open the front doors.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
CAUTION!
Make sure on one is in the vehicle when working on airbag system, especially if airbag system is connected to power source or battery is reconnected.
- Release steering column adjuster.
- Turn steering wheel - 1 - until the steering wheel spoke is in a vertical position. Pull out steering column entirely and push into lower position.
- Secure steering column adjustment.
- Insert a slot-head screwdriver (removal tool JC 1000 in the USA) with a blade width of approximately 8 mm and a shaft length of approximately 70 mm into the opening on the rear side of the steering wheel. (Press the wide side of the screwdriver blade to the outside of the steering wheel).
- Turn the screwdriver (removal tool JC 1000 in the USA) - arrow -. In this case, clamp - 2 - will be pressed down and the catch - 3 - of the airbag unit - 4 - will thereby disengage.
- Turn the steering wheel back 180° and disengage the second catch on the opposite side.
- Turn steering wheel - 1 - to center position (wheels in straight-ahead position).
- Disconnect the harness connector(s) from airbag unit - 4 -.
Installation
- Insert airbag unit - 4 - after connecting harness connector - 2 - into steering wheel - 1 - and push downward until catches - 5 - engage.
- Switch the ignition on.
- Close doors.
- Connect the battery ground cable.
CAUTION!
Make sure on one is in the vehicle when working on airbag system, especially if airbag system is connected to power source or battery is reconnected.
• After connecting the battery, the vehicle options (radio, clock, electric window regulator) must be checked according to the repair information and/or user manual.
