Oil Pump, Through MY 2007

Oil Pump, through MY 2007

This description applies to engines that have a roller chain as the timing mechanism drive chain.

In Model Year (MY) 2008, the timing mechanism drive chain was changed from a roller chain to a toothed chain.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) (VAG 1331)

Counter hold tool (T10172)

Oil pump align plate (T03005)

Removing

- Remove the upper oil pan. Refer to => [ Upper Oil Pan ] Upper Oil Pan.

- Tension the chain tensioner - 1 -, secure it using the (T10115) and remove it.

- Remove the bolt - 1 -.

Hold the sprocket - 2 - in place using the (T10172).

- Remove the oil pump sprocket from the oil pump and remove the oil pump.

Installing

Crankshaft is secured

- Replace the O-ring - item 24 - in => [ O-ring ] Lubrication System Components Overview and hand tighten the bolts with the oil pump to the cylinder block.

- Place the sprocket with the lettering facing outward onto the oil pump shaft and install it with a new bolt - 1 - (drive chain not yet installed).

Tightening specification: 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn

- Loosen the bolts - 2 through 4 -.

Oil pump must be able to be slid easily.

- Check the (T03005). If there are still protective shields on the magnets, remove them.

- Check that there are no shavings located on the magnets of the (T03005).

The contact surfaces on the crankshaft, the tool and the chain sprocket must be clean.

- Place the (T03005) on to the crankshaft and secure it with 2 bolts - 1 - for the vibration damper/crankshaft pulley.

Tightening specification: 30 Nm

Oil pump is activated by magnets.

- Remove the (T40069).

- Press the crankshaft in the axial bearing play toward the belt drive - arrow 1 - and secure it with a shim as shown in the illustration.

- Press the oil pump lightly toward the chain drive - arrow 2 -.

This step is important in order to guarantee the correct position of the sprockets to each other.

- In this condition, first tighten the bolts - 2 and 3 - and then bolt - 4 - to 25 Nm.

- Install the (T40069) again. Crankshaft must only be rotated slightly around the Top Dead Center (TDC) point for this. Otherwise there is a risk the valves rest on the pistons.

- Remove the (T03005).

- If a new oil pump is installed, fill the oil pump with some engine oil via the intake passage and rotate the oil pump several times through.

- Place the drive chain onto the oil pump sprocket.

- Install the upper oil pan. Refer to => [ Upper Oil Pan ] Upper Oil Pan.

- Install the guide rail - 2 -, relieve the tension on the chain tensioner - 1 - and pull out the (T10115).

Make sure that the drive chain lies correct in the guide rail - 4 - and in the tensioning rail - 3 -.

- Adjust the valve timing. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

The rest of the installation follows the reverse of the removal procedures. When doing this note the following:

Remove the (T40069) from the cylinder block and install the locking bolt (30 Nm).

Fill with coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.
