Sound Proofing / Insulation: Description and Operation

Body Foam Filling

Various hollow areas on this vehicle are filled with foam.

Position of foam filling pieces is found in the individual repair descriptions.

The transfer of driving noises into the passenger compartment are reduced by the foam filling.

Molded foam pieces are used for the foam filler (replacement parts name: insulation).

The molded foam pieces are listed in the replacement parts catalog in illustration number 864-00.

Molded foam pieces are installed in the body shell work and increase in volume after priming in the paint drying oven at approximately 180° C.

As this temperature is not obtained under workshop conditions, proceed as follows:

Preconditions

- Before performing these work steps, the sheet metal to be replaced must be prepared for installation, e.g. by cutting, fitting, corrosion protection.

- Remove foam residue from vehicle.

- Restore paint structure.

Replacing molded foam pieces

- Place sealing cord ( AKD 497 010 04 R10) along the circumference of the molded foam pieces.

- Install the molded foam pieces in the vehicle.

- Secure the new part (e.g. A-pillar) while gently pressing the new part in the area of the molded foam insert until it makes contact and then weld it in.

- Do not do perform gas-shielded arc welding within 15 mm on either side of molded foam pieces.

After painting vehicle, seal cavities in the area of the repair.
