Compact Disc Player (CD): Service and Repair






CD Changer (R41)

CD Changer - Model Year 1998, Installing

To check the compatibility of a radio and CD changer, always contact the replacement parts service department.

The approved maintenance and installation work for the CD changers installed in MY 98, are described in the following.

CD Changer ( 1J5 035 111)

Installation Kit ( 1C0 098 201)

Prior to installation, observe the following assembly instructions.

Always install the CD changer according to the following instructions.

Installation location: Inside the luggage compartment on the left side in the rear, directly behind the folding rear seat backrest.

The preparation for the CD changer (wiring harness and harness connector) is visible on the inside left of the luggage compartment.

Installing the Bracket

- Remove the luggage compartment floor.





- Pay attention to the position of the three assembly holes for the bracket of the CD changer - arrows -.





Depending on the version, two wiring harnesses can be used for the CD changer.

Version 1

Harness connector - 1 - and the wiring harness are clipped into the left side part of the luggage compartment - arrow -.





- Remove the clip - arrow - and bend the harness connector back.

Version 2

The harness connector and wiring harness are clipped into the cover.





- Unclip the cover and disconnect the connector.

A marking (CD) - arrow - is located on the back of the luggage compartment floor.





- Cut the marked area - arrow - out.

- Place the luggage compartment floor back in the luggage compartment.





- Screw the CD changer - 1 - bracket via screws - 2 - to the floor.





Tightening Specifications: 5 Nm.

Adjusting the CD Changer Installation Position

- Check whether both adjusting levers - arrow - on the CD changer are in the V (vertical) position.





In the case of an incorrect adjustment, the CD changer skips.

- If a readjustment is necessary, loosen the securing screws, move the adjusting lever up to the V position, and tighten the screws.

Tightening Specifications 2 Nm

Installing

- Screw side bracket - 1 - with screws - 2 - onto the CD changer.





Tightening Specifications: 3 Nm.

- Connect the harness connectors and clip the harness connector into the bracket - arrow -.

- Insert the CD changer in the bracket and guide the wire under the CD changer to the harness connector - arrow -.

- Install the cover for CD changer - 1 - and ensure that the tips under the cover engage in the grooves on the bracket for the CD changer - arrow -.





- Swivel cover - 1 - to CD changer - 2 -.

- Secure the cover with two screws.

Tightening Specifications 3 Nm

- Code the radio to operate with the CD changer. Refer to => [ Radio Components, Adapting ] Radio Components, Adapting.

Malfunction recognition for the radio / CD changer does not work if the radio is not coded for CD operation.

CD Changer - Model Year 1999 to Feb. 2007, Installing

CD Changer (1J6 035 111)

Installation Kit (1C0 098 201)

Prior to installation, observe the following assembly instructions.

Always install the CD changer according to the following instructions.

Installation location: Inside the luggage compartment on the left side in the rear, directly behind the folding rear seat backrest.

The preparation for the CD changer (R41) (wiring harness and harness connector) is visible on the inside left rear of the luggage compartment.

Installing the Bracket

- Remove the luggage compartment floor

A marking (CD) is located on the back of the luggage compartment floor.





- Cut the marked area - arrow - out.





- Pay attention to the position of the three assembly holes - arrows - for the bracket of the CD changer.





- Remove the cover - arrow - from the wiring harness of the CD changer.





- Expose the harness connector on the wiring harness as shown.

There is a marking - arrow - on the cover.





- Cut the marked area - arrow - out.

- Guide the cable through the cover and install the cover. The cable is now protruding into the luggage compartment.





- Place the luggage compartment floor back in the luggage compartment.

- Screw the CD changer - 1 - bracket via screws - 2 - to the floor.





Tightening Specifications 5 Nm

Adjusting the CD Changer Installation Position

- Check whether the adjusting levers - arrow - on the CD changer are in the V (vertical) position.

- Swivel cover - 1 - to CD changer - 2 -.

- Secure the cover with two screws.

Tightening Specifications: 3 Nm.

- Code the radio to operate with the CD changer. Refer to => [ Radio Components, Adapting ] Radio Components, Adapting.

Malfunction recognition for the radio / CD changer does not work if the radio is not coded for CD operation.

CD Changer From May 2007, Installing

Installation is performed in the same manner as in model year 1999 to 02.07. Refer to => [ CD Changer - Model Year 1999 to Feb. 2007, Installing ].

The CD changer option in the luggage compartment has also been offered with the new bracket in the New Beetle convertible since 05.07.

CD Changer In Center Console

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Radio Removal Tool (VAS 3316)

The approved maintenance and installation work for the CD changer installed from 08.02, are described in the following.

Installation Kit (1C0 098 201)

CD Changer (1J6 035 111)

The CD changer - 1 - is installed in the center console.





Always install the CD changer according to the following instructions.

If the CD changer only plays commercially available CDs but not CD-R's the CD changer is not defective. The CD changer may not be replaced for this reason.

Mixed CDs (data and music) will not play.

Removing

Remove the storage compartment if no CD changer is installed:

- Fold the center armrest all the way up.

- Remove the storage compartment upward - arrows -.





The connection wire for the CD changer is visible from above when the armrest is open and the compartment is removed from the center console.

Prior to removal or installation of the CD changer, the harness connector for the preparation for the CD changer in the center console must be disconnected.

The harness connector for the CD changer is clipped into bracket- 1 - in the center console.





- Remove the rear ashtray from the center console.

- Remove the rear cover from the center console.

- Remove the right side trim from the center console.

Pay attention to the installation position of the connector.

- Disengage harness connector at points designated with - arrows - and disconnect it.





- Disconnect connector - 1 - with retaining clip - 3 - from the bracket.





- Insert the (VAS 3316) into the provided slots on the left and right - arrows - on the CD changer until it engages audibly.





- Remove the CD changer using the (VAS 3316) - arrows -.





Do not tilt or bend the (3316).

- Squeeze the clips - arrow - and remove the ( VAS 3316).





Installing

- Position the CD changer vertically with the control buttons pointing toward the vehicle side - 1 - in the assembly frame and guide the harness connector to the bracket in the center console.





- Connect connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and secure the harness connector with clip- 3 - on the bracket of the center console.





The further installation is performed in the reverse order.

Unit needs no coding. The components are automatically coordinated to one another.

- Perform a function test and check all DTC memories using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B ).
