Subframe






Subframe

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with universal transmission support (V.A.G 1359/2)

Removing

- Lift vehicle enough that the front axle is no longer burdened.

- Remove wheel.

- Remove sound insulation pan - arrows -.





- Remove left sound insulation - arrows -.





With TDI Engine

- Remove charge air pipe between charge air cooler and turbocharger.

Continuation for All

- Remove right sound insulation panel.

- Mark installation position of bolts - arrows - for ball joint - 1 - on control arm - 2 -.





- Mark installation position of ball joint - 1 - to control arm - 2 -.

- Remove drive axle from flange shaft/transmission.

- Fasten drive axle to body with wire.

Drive axle must not hang down!

- Pull out wheel bearing housing with ball joint from control arm.

- Swivel suspension strut outward and support e.g. using block of wood- 1 -.





- If installed, remove protective cap for inner right constant velocity joint from engine.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove pendulum support.





- Remove bolts - 5 - for steering gear.

- For TDI engines, remove bolts - 6 - for exhaust system.

- Place engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A ) with (V.A.G 1359/2) under subframe.

- Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 - for subframe.

- Remove coupling rod nut - 7 - from stabilizer bar.

- Lower subframe using engine/transmission jack ( V.A.G 1383 A).

Installing

Before fastening bolts for subframe, position steering gear on subframe and fasten bolts for steering gear.

Threaded sleeve - 1 - of steering gear must sit in bore of subframe.





- Tighten bolts for control arm and ball joint on to old marks.

Rest of installation is in reverse order of removal.

After installing check position of steering wheel during a road test.

If steering wheel is crooked, an axle alignment must be performed!
