Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
Removing
The steering column is delivered only as a complete replacement part. Servicing is not possible.
The steering lock housing can be transferred..
Before starting work on electrical equipment and removing steering wheel, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
• Remove the battery ground (GND) strap.
• Wheels must be located in straight ahead position.
If these notes are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!
- Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.
- Pull lever downward beneath steering column.
- Swing steering column downward as far as possible and pull out.
- Push lever under steering column upward again.
- Remove airbag from steering wheel.
- Remove steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Service and Repair.
- Remove steering column switch trim.
- Remove the left trim panel on the driver side.
- Remove steering column switch.
- Remove footwell vent outlets beneath steering column.
- Disconnect the connector - 1 -.
- Remove cable channel - 1 - beneath steering column. To do so, gently lift tabs - arrow - on both sides and pull cable channel out of guide on steering column.
- Remove the nuts - arrows - and remove foot well trim - 1 -.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and pull off universal joint - 2 - from steering gear.
- Remove ground (GND) cable - arrow - and cable - 1 - from steering column.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.
Vehicles equipped with crash braces
- Remove ground (GND) cable - arrow - and cable - 1 - from steering column.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the clutch pedal crash brace - 2 -.
- Remove the bolt - 3 - and remove the brake pedal crash brace - 4 -.
Continuation for all vehicles
- Lower steering column slightly and carefully pull out upward.
Installing
- Engage steering column into assembly aid on mounting bracket.
- Align steering column to mounting bracket and install.
Thereby the tabs - arrows A - of the mounting bracket and the holes - arrows B - of the steering column must be positioned together and be placed into one another.
Only in this way is the correct installation position of steering column to mounting bracket guaranteed.
- Tighten bolts - 2 - of steering column.
- Install ground (GND) cable - arrow - and cable - 1 - onto steering column.
Vehicles equipped with crash braces
- Tighten bolts - 2 - of steering column.
- Install the clutch pedal crash brace - 2 - and tighten the bolt - 1 -.
- Install the brake pedal crash brace - 4 - and tighten the bolt - 3 -.
- Install ground (GND) cable - arrow - and cable - 1 - onto steering column.
Continuation for all vehicles
- Connect universal joint - 2 - onto steering gear pinion and tighten bolt - 1 -.
- Install foot well trim - 1 - and secure with nuts - arrows -.
- Install cable channel - 1 - beneath steering column.
Tabs - arrow - must engage into guide on both sides.
- Connect the connector - 1 -.
- Install footwell vent outlets beneath steering column.
- Install steering column switch.
- Install steering column switch trim.
- Install the left trim panel on the driver side.
- Installing steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Service and Repair.
- Install airbag in steering wheel.
- Perform basic setting for Steering Angle Sensor (G85) with the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B).
