Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair
Airbag Spiral Spring/ Return Spring With Slip Ring -F138-
Caution!
When disconnecting and connecting the Battery, the procedure must be followed as described.
NOTE:
While removing the steering column switches, ensure that no shavings enter steering column switches when drilling the shear bolts.
Preliminary Tasks:
When removing the complete steering column switches including base carrier, it is disassembled and steering lock housing is also removed with it. New shear bolts are required for installing steering lock housing. Also, if only on individual component of steering column switch is removed or replaced, the sequence described in the following must always be adhered to.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to: Service and Repair
- Remove the steering column trim. Refer to: Service and Repair
Remove the steering column switch components:
- Steering column electronic systems control module -J527-. Refer to: Service and Repair
NOTE:
- After installing a new steering column electronics control module, it must be coded. Refer to: Testing and Inspection
- Of steering column switch malfunctions occur, the coding of the steering column electronics control module must be checked. Refer to: Testing and Inspection
Removing
WARNING!
When removing, the Airbag Spiral/ Return Spring With Slip Ring -F138- must not be twisted out of the center position and the wheels must be straight ahead.
- Lift the retainers -arrows- on airbag spiral spring/ return spring with slip ring -1- slightly and pull airbag spiral spring/ return spring with slip ring back from steering column.
Installation
Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
The airbag spiral spring/ return spring with slip ring must be in the center position and the wheels must be turned to the straight-ahead position when installing the airbag spiral spring/ return spring with slip ring -F138-
The airbag spiral spring/ return spring with slip ring center position, which depends on the manufacturer, is depicted as follows:
- The color marked (black square) band -arrow- must be located in viewing window -1-.
- The color marked (yellow) band -arrow- must be located in viewing window -1-.
NOTE:
If a new Steering Angle Sensor -G85- is installed, then the work procedure: Steering Angle Sensor -G85- Basic Setting, must be performed. Refer to: Service and Repair
