Driver and Passenger Side Curtain Airbag

• Removal and installation is described for the right side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the left side is identical.

Removal


• Read the General Safety Precautions for working with airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.

• Pay attention especially to the instructions for side airbag modules. Refer to => [ Side Airbag Module Safety Precautions ] Side Airbag Module Safety Precautions.

- If present, open sunroof.

- Disconnect vehicle battery.

- Remove sun visors. Refer to => [ Sun Visor ] .

- Remove roof grab handle. Refer to => [ Roof Grab Handles ] Roof Grab Handles.

- Remove lights and switches in headliner.

- Remove roof end strip. Refer to => [ Roof End Strip ] Roof End Strip.

- Remove upper trim on A-pillars. Refer to => [ Upper A-pillar Trim ] Upper A-pillar Trim.

- Remove upper trim on B-pillars. Refer to => [ Upper B-pillar Trim ] Upper B-pillar Trim.

- Remove trim on C-pillars. Refer to => [ C-pillar Trim ] C-pillar Trim.


Perform the following work steps especially carefully in order to prevent damage to headliner.

- Lower headliner (headliner must not be removed from vehicle, front seats and front passenger side door are not removed). Refer to => [ Molded Headliner ] Molded Headliner.


Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatically discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connectors. This is done, for example, by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.

- Disconnect harness connector - 1 - from curtain airbag

- Remove bolts - 2 - (4.5 Nm).

• Bolts - 2 - must be replaced.

- Remove cap nut - 3 - (9 Nm).

- Remove all side curtain airbag clips from the body.

- Pull off igniter - 4 - from threaded pin - 5 - in body.

- With a second mechanic, remove curtain airbag from vehicle.





Installation

- To install, perform the steps used for removal in reverse order.

- Switch on ignition.


Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.

- Connect vehicle battery.
