Drive Axle Assembly Overview, with Mounted CV Joint VL 107






1 Outer CV Joint

Replace only as complete unit.

Removing, refer to => [ Removing the Outer CV Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

Installing: Drive onto shaft until impact using plastic hammer.

Checking, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking, with CV Joint VL100 ] Outer CV Joint, Checking, with CV Joint VL100.

2 Bolt

Various versions.

Hex head bolt: 200 Nm + 180° turn

Bolt, loosening and tightening, refer to => [ Drive Axle Hex Bolt Connection, Loosening and Tightening ] Description and Operation.


There are 2 types of twelve-point bolts, with and without ribs. Distinguishing characteristic, refer to => [ Differences Between a Twelve-Point Bolt with Ribs and a Twelve-Point Bolt without Ribs ].

When installing a twelve-point bolt, always check what type of twelve-point bolt is to be used.

Use the correct tightening specification for the specific bolt.

The tightening specification for a twelve-point bolt with ribs is 70 Nm + 90° turn. For loosening and tightening specifications, refer to => [ Drive Axle Twelve-Point Bolt with Ribs, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle Twelve-Point Bolt with Ribs, Loosening and Tightening.

The tightening specification for a twelve-point bolt without ribs is 200 Nm + 180° turn. For loosening and tightening specifications, refer to => [ Drive Axle Twelve-Point Bolt with Ribs, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle Twelve-Point Bolt with Ribs, Loosening and Tightening.

Always replace if removed.

3 Securing Ring

Always replace if removed.

Insert in shaft groove.

4 Thrust Washer

Installed position, refer to => [ Installed Location of Spring Washer and Thrust Washer On Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

5 Dished Washer

Installed position, refer to => [ Installed Location of Spring Washer and Thrust Washer On Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

6 Clamp

Always replace if removed.

Tensioning, refer to => [ Tightening Hose Clamp on Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

7 Protective Boot

Check for tears and scuffing.

Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer).

8 Clamp

Always replace if removed.

Tensioning, refer to => [ Tensioning Clamp On Small Diameter ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

9 Drive Axle

10 Clamp

Always replace if removed.

Tensioning, refer to => [ Tensioning Clamp On Small Diameter ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

11 CV Boot

Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer)

Without ventilation bore.

Check for tears and scuffing.

Drive off CV joint using drift.

Coat the sealing surface with D 454 300 A2 before installing it on the CV joint.

12 Clamp

Always replace if removed.

Tensioning, refer to => [ Tightening Hose Clamp on Outer Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

13 Backing Plate

Always replace if removed.

14 Cover

Carefully drive off using a drift.

Coat the sealing surface with D 454 300 A2 before installing it on the CV joint.

Adhesive surface must be free of oil and grease.

15 Inner CV Joint

Replace only as complete unit.

Pressing off, refer to => [ Removing the Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

Pressing on, refer to => [ Pressing On Inner CV Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

16 Gasket

Bonding surface on CV joint must be free of grease and oil!

17 Securing Ring

Remove and install using snap ring pliers (VW 161 A).

18 Cover

Always replace if removed.

Pressing off, refer to => [ Drive Off Cover for Inner Joint ] Drive Axle with CV Joint VL107.

19 Bolt

First tighten diagonally to 10 Nm, then tighten diagonally again to the tightening specification.

M8 bolt: 40 Nm

M10 bolt: 70 Nm

Always replace bolts after disassembly.

The contact surfaces - arrow A - and - arrow B - are different on the two-point bolts.
