Final Drive, Differential (09G Transmission)






Flange Shaft Seal

(Transmission in vehicle)

Only the left side is described here. Replacing the right side seal is almost the same.

- On the right, the drive axle remains in the wheel bearing, use the (T10177), on the left side, remove the drive axle and use the (T10176).

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Drip tray (V.A.G 1306)

Puller (T10055)

Thrust piece (T10176)

Removing

- Remove the noise insulation.

- Place the (VAG 1306) underneath.

- Remove the left ball joint lower nuts - arrows - from the control arm.





- Press the drive axle out of the transmission.

Right Side

- Place the right drive axle as far upward as possible and secure it in this position.





Left Side

Do not set the vehicle on the floor.

- Press the brake in order to remove the left drive axle bolt - arrow - (second technician).





- Remove the left drive axle.

- Seal the opening of the drive axle at the transmission using clean cloth - A -.





- Carefully drill a hole - B - (2 to 4 millimeters (mm) in size) into the outer metal ring - C - of the seal.

Grease the drill bit - B - so that the drill shavings remain held.

Drill only through the metal ring - C -, otherwise the transmission may be damaged.

- Install a screw - arrow - (approximately 4 mm in diameter) into the drilled hole in the seal.





Do not install the screw too deeply to prevent damage to bearing lying behind it.

- Pull out the seal using (T10055) and (T10055/2).

- Remove the cloth and thoroughly clean the transmission and opening for the drive axle.

Metal shavings must not get into the transmission or into the opening for the drive axle, vacuum up the shavings if necessary.

If only the metal ring of the seal could be removed, carefully pry out the remaining seal using screwdriver.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

- Lubricate the outer circumference and sealing lips of the seal with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).

Installed position:

The open side of the seal faces the transmission.

- Install the seal by hand as far as possible.

Left Side



- Drive in the seal until seated using (T10176), do not tilt the seal while doing this.

Right Side

- Drive in the seal until seated using (T10177), do not tilt the seal while doing this.

- Install the drive axle.

- Check the ATF level and top off. Refer to => [ ATF Level, Checking and Filling ] Testing and Inspection.

- Install the noise insulation.
