Engine Number
Engine Number
The engine code - arrow A - and engine number (serial number) - arrow B - are located on the rear side of the engine, above the partition of cylinder block/upper oil pan.
The engine number consists of up to nine alphanumeric characters. The first section (maximum 3 letters) is the engine code and the second section (six digits) is the serial number. If more than 999,999 engines with the same engine code were produced, the first of the 6 digits is replaced with a letter.
A label is also affixed on the cylinder head cover with the engine code and serial number.
The engine code is also on the vehicle data plate.
Vehicles with Four Digit Engine Codes
Four digit engine codes beginning with "C" are used. The first three digits describe the mechanical structure of the engine and are still stamped on the engine, as before. The fourth digit indicates the engine output and torque and depends on the Engine Control Module (ECM). The four digit engine code is on the type label, the vehicle data plate and the ECM.
• Vehicles for some countries do not have a type label. Vehicle data plate and type label locations.
