Engine Control Module with Anti-Theft Protection

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Locking pliers

Electric cutter (V.A.G 1561A)

Saw set (V.A.G 1561/14)

Hot air gun from wiring harness repair kit (VAS 1978 )

If it is desired to replace Engine Control Module (ECM), connect Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051 ) and perform the guided function "Replace control module ".

Removing

- Switch off ignition.

- Remove windshield wiper arms, plenum chamber cover and plenum chamber facing wall

Thread of shear bolts is equipped with locking compound. By heating the shear bolts using a hot air gun, inhibition effect of the locking compound is lowered.

CAUTION!
Cover wires, harness connectors and control modules in the close vicinity of Engine Control Module (ECM) to prevent damage from burning.

Perform the adjustments on the hot air gun - 4 - as shown:

- Turn potentiometer for temperature adjustment - 2 - to maximum heat output (600 °C).





- Move two stage switch for air quantity - 3 - to position 3.

CAUTION!
By heating the shear bolts, parts of the protective housing are heated intensely. Wear protective gloves to prevent injuries.

- Guide nozzle of hot air gun on to shear bolts.

- Switch heat gun on and warm bolts.

- Remove bolts using locking pliers.

If the bolts cannot be removed, saw into the heads so two parallel surfaces are formed - arrows - and then remove them.





- Insert a screwdriver - A - between protective housing and retaining plate - arrow -.





- Pry protective housing upward using screwdriver - A - and pull it off sideways from retaining plate - arrow -.





- Disengage forward harness connector - 1 - from Engine Control Module (ECM) and disconnect it.





- Pry up locking mechanism - 2 - slightly.

- Then slide Engine Control Module (ECM) out of retainer - arrow -.

- Now disengage rear harness connector from Engine Control Module (ECM) and disconnect it.

Installing

- Connect rear harness connector to Engine Control Module (ECM) and engage it.

- Slide Engine Control Module (ECM) on to retaining plate.

- Now connect front harness connector to Engine Control Module (ECM) and engage it.

- Slide protective housing on to retaining plate.

- Tighten shear bolts - 1 - uniformly until bolt heads shear off.





- Install plenum chamber bulkhead

- Install wiper arms and plenum chamber cover
