Brake Caliper
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Brake pedal actuator (V.A.G 1869/2)
Removing
The work sequence applies only for replacement of the brake caliper housing or the following repairs on the brake caliper housing.
- Remove wheels.
- Disconnect harness connector - 1 - on vehicles with brake pad wear indicator.
- Attach bleeder bottle bleeder hose onto bleeder valve of brake caliper housing and open bleeder valve.
- Install brake pedal actuator (V.A.G 1869/2 ).
- Close bleeder valve and remove bleeder bottle.
- Remove brake hose.
- Pull both covers out of brake caliper housing bearing bushings.
- Unscrew and remove both guide pins - arrows - from brake caliper housing.
- Remove brake caliper housing from brake carrier.
- Remove brake pads from brake caliper housing.
Installing
• The piston is pushed back.
- Install inner brake pad (piston side) - 1 - and outer brake pad - 2 - in brake caliper housing using retaining springs.
• Inner brake pad (piston side) with large three-finger clip - 1 -.
• Outer brake pad with small three-finger clip - 2 - (black).
- Install brake caliper housing - arrow - at bottom first.
- Install brake caliper housing with brake pads to wheel bearing housing.
Brake caliper housing pin - arrow - must be behind wheel bearing housing guide!
- Tighten brake caliper housing to brake carrier using both guide pins.
- Install both protective caps.
- Attach brake hose to brake caliper housing.
- Remove brake pedal actuator (V.A.G 1869/2).
- Insert connector for brake pad wear indicator into bracket at suspension strut.
- Bleeding brake system:

- Mount wheels.
• Depress brake pedal several times firmly before moving vehicle to properly seat brake pads in their normal operating position.
• Check brake fluid level.
