Coolant Thermostat
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hex ball socket (T10058)
• Torque wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)
Removing
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to --> [ Draining and Filling ] [1][2]Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
- Remove the cover for the air guide; disengage the side clips to do so - arrows -.
- Unclip the lower air guide, disengage the clips to do so - arrows -.
- Remove the lower air guide together with the air guide hose.
- Remove the charge air pipe leading to the noise generator. Refer to --> [ Charge Air Pipe to Noise Generator ] Service and Repair.
- Loosen the charge air pipe clamp - 2 -.
- Remove the charge air pipe bolt - 4 -.
- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - from the charge air pressure sensor.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the charge air pipe downward.
- Laying aside the coolant hose - 2 - is a electrical wiring harness - 1 -.
- Remove the bolt - arrow - and remove harness bracket.
- Remove the bolt - 2 - for the after run coolant pump bracket.
• The after run coolant pump stays in the installed position.
- Remove the coolant hoses - 1 and 2 - and lay them aside.
- Loosen the nut - 2 -, remove the bolt - 1 - and move the support for the intake manifold to the right.
- Remove the oil separator. Refer to --> [ Oil Separator ] Oil Separator.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove the connecting pieces. For the right bolt, the (T10058) is useful.
- Remove the coolant thermostat.
Installing
• Tightening specifications, refer to --> [ Coolant Pump and Thermostat Assembly Overview ] Coolant Pump and Thermostat Assembly Overview.
Install in reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:
• Replace the gaskets and O-rings.
- Clean the O-ring sealing surface.
- Coat the O-ring with coolant additive G 12 plus-plus.
- Install the thermostat - 4 - into the housing - 5 - for the coolant pump and move it slightly forward - arrow -.
- Carefully mount the connecting piece - 3 -; while doing so, insert the centering pin - 2 - into the guide - 1 -.
