Drive Axle, with CV Joint VL107 Installed on Stub Shaft
Drive Axle, with CV Joint VL107 Installed on Stub Shaft
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Slide hammer - complete set (VW 771)
• Tensioning strap (T10038)
• Puller (T10382)
• Torque wrench 40-200 Nm (VAG 1332)
• Angle wrench (VAG 1756)
Removing
- Loosen the drive axle to wheel hub bolt. Refer to --> [ Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.
CAUTION!
Vehicle must not rest on its wheels when doing so.
With bolts loosened, the wheel bearing can be damaged by the vehicle's own weight.
If a vehicle needs to be moved when the drive axle is removed, an outer joint must be installed and tightened to 120 Nm.
- Remove the lower noise insulation.
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows -.
- Remove the lower control arm from the ball joint studs.
- Remove the coupling rods from the stabilizer bar on both sides.
- Slide the outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint out of wheel hub by hand.
- Secure the drive axle from falling using wire.
- Install the (T10382).
For the CV joint - 1 -, the opening - arrow - in the (T10382/2) must face the (T10382/2).
- Attach the (T10382) to the (VW 771).
• In order to remove the drive axle from the transmission using the (T10382), the strut and all its components must be pulled toward the rear of the vehicle.
- Pull the strut and its components using the (T10038) as far as possible to the rear of the vehicle, for example on the hoist arm, until the (T10382) can be installed parallel to the drive axle.
- Install the (T10382) and remove the drive axle.
- Remove the drive axle from the vehicle.
Installing
Remove any paint residue and/or corrosion in the threads/splines of the outer CV joint.
- Install the new circlip into the stub shaft groove on the transmission.
- Lightly lubricate the stub shaft splines using universal grease (G 060 735 A2).
- Align the outer splines of the transmission with the inner splines of the CV joint.
- Grab the drive axle by hand and push it into the CV joint until seated.
- Now push the CV joint with one quick shove onto the transmission stub shaft.
• Do not use a hammer under any circumstances!
- Make sure the CV joint is securely installed by pulling the CV joint against the circlip resistance.
CAUTION!
For this check, do not pull on the drive axle, but rather only on the CV joint.
- Remove the (T10038).
- Insert the outer CV joint as far as possible into the wheel hub splines.
- Install the lower control arm to the ball joint studs and install the nuts.- arrows -.
• Make sure that the ball joint boot is not damaged or twisted.
- Install the lower noise insulation.
- Tighten the drive axle to wheel hub bolt. Refer to --> [ Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.
• When doing this, the vehicle must not rest on its wheels, otherwise the wheel bearing may be damaged.
- Install the wheel and tighten. Refer to --> [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specification ] .
