Drive Axle Assembly Overview, with Triple Roller Joint AAR3300i
1 Outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint
• Replace only as complete unit.
• Removing, refer to --> [ Removing the Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint ] Drive Axle, with CV Joint VL107 Bolted to Intermediate Shaft
• Installing: Drive CV joint onto the axle shaft using a plastic hammer, until expanded securing ring contracts.
• Checking, refer to --> [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Outer CV Joint, Checking.
2 Bolt
• M16 x 1.5 x 80.
• Hex bolt = 200 Nm + 180° additional turn.
• 12 point bolt = 70 mm + 90° additional turn.
• Always replace after removal.
Vehicle must not rest on its wheels when loosening and tightening.
3 Clamp
• Always replace after removal.
• Tensioning refer to --> [ Tension the clamp using. ] Drive Axle, with Triple Roller Joint AAR3300i.
4 Outer CV joint boot
• Check for tears and scuffing.
• Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer).
5 Clamp
• Always replace after removal.
• Tensioning, refer to --> [ Tensioning Clamp for Outer CV Joint Boot ] Drive Axle, with CV Joint VL107 Bolted to Intermediate Shaft
6 Dished washer
• Installed position, refer to --> [ Installed Location of Spring and Thrust Washers for Outer CV Joint ] Drive Axle, with CV Joint VL107 Bolted to Intermediate Shaft
7 Thrust washer
• Installed position, refer to --> [ Installed Location of Spring and Thrust Washers for Outer CV Joint ] Drive Axle, with CV Joint VL107 Bolted to Intermediate Shaft
8 Securing ring
• Always replace after removal.
• Insert in axle shaft groove.
9 Securing ring
• Always replace after removal.
• Insert in axle shaft groove.
10 Triple rotor star with rollers
Chamfer - arrow - faces the drive axle splines.
11 Clamp
• Always replace after removal.
• Tension using (VAG 1275).
12 Inner CV joint boot
• Check for tears and scuffing.
13 Clamp
• Always replace after removal.
• Tension using (VAG 1275).
14 Axle shaft
15 Bolt, 20 Nm
16 Mounting bracket
17 Mount
18 Joint piece with intermediate shaft
• For the right side of the vehicle.
19 Bolt
• Pre-tighten to 5 Nm, then tighten to 35 Nm.
20 Joint piece
• For the left side of the vehicle.
21 Bolt
• First pre-tighten to 10 Nm in a diagonal sequence, then tighten to specification in a diagonal sequence.
M8 bolt = 40 Nm.
M10 bolt = 70 Nm.
• Always replace bolts after disassembly.
