Transmission, Removing
- Before removing, print out a diagnostic protocol from this vehicle. Before sending transmission back in usual manner, secure this protocol to transmission so that it is not lost during transportation.
Description
The transmission is removed downward as a unit.
The battery, air filter and starter are removed. Coolant hoses are disconnected and engine and transmission supported before left mounting bracket is removed.
From below:
- Subframe - is removed together with - left plate -, - pendulum support - and - left control arm -.
If plate is not secured, you must perform a vehicle alignment later.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine support bridge (10-222A)
• Adjustment plate (3282/42); for transmissions with mounting hole
• Additional hooks (10-222A/13)
• Hose clamps up to dia. 40 mm (3093)
• Transmission support (3282)
• Socket, 18 mm (T10179)
• Adapter (10-222A/3)
• Tools not illustration:
• If not hose clamps up to dia. 40 mm (3093) are present, take hose clamps up to dia. 25 mm (3094)
• Pin (3282/29)
• Plate (3282/52)
• Adjustment plate (3282/42 A); for transmissions without mounting hole
• Security mount (3282/59)
• Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
Removing:
- Lift vehicle, all 4 take-up points of lifting platform at same height.
- Place selector lever in park.
• Do not place vehicle on floor after loosening centered bolt.
- Press brake in order to remove drive axle left bolt - arrow - (second technician).
- Remove air filter housing
- Remove battery and battery box
- Remove starter motor.
- Remove selector lever cable from transmission.
Both lock washers must later be replaced when adjusting cable.
• Remove cable from transmission mounting bracket with great care. Do not bend.
Slide cable back slightly from mounting bracket and later remove when lowering transmission. Observe cable when lowering transmission.
During later installation, only engage new lock washers after you have checked and adjusted cable --> [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking ] Procedures.
- Clamp off coolant hoses with Hose Clamps Up to 25 mm dia. (3093/3094) and remove
- Remove cable bracket from black front transmission cover (2 nuts M6).
- Release Mechatronic connector retainer by rotating and remove connector.
- Remove all upper engine/transmission bolts. Socket SW 18 (T10179) is especially good for this.
- Remove both filler pieces from upper edge of left and right fenders.
- Disconnect any hoses and cables in area of engine support bridge (10-222A) lifting eye on engine.
- Support engine with transmission using engine support bridge (10 - 222 A), hooks (10 - 222 A /10) and adapter (10 - 222 A /13). Do not lift up.
- Remove all bolts - 1 - and - 2 - of plate - A -.
- Lower engine/transmission slightly over engine support bridge (10 - 222 A) spindle so plate can be removed.
Remove plate - arrow -.
- Remove noise insulation tray and lower part of left front wheel housing liner.
- Remove drive axle from transmission and carefully lay aside.
Surface coating of axle must not be damaged.
Remove left drive axle and remove subframe.
Remove - subframe - with left control arm and left plate.
If plate left is not secured, you must perform a vehicle alignment later.
- A small, additional cover plate (above right drive flange) is located on engine/transmission intermediate plate. Remove this cover plate - A -.
- Align transmission support (3282) with adjustment plate (3282/42) for transmissions with mounting hole, or adjustment plate (3282/42 A) for transmissions without mounting hole.
- Guide engine and transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) under transmission and support transmission. Do not lift up.
The transmission is disconnected from engine in this position.
- Remove all remaining engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Remove transmission from engine while being careful of selector lever cable and lower transmission.
