Transmission, Changing Oil, Filter and Adjusting Oil Level

Oil and filter change with oil level adjustment only needs to be done after a repair or within the scope of a service inspection. There are no other reasons to fill oil.

Description

First, oil temperature is read out. If it is higher than 50° Celsius, allow transmission to cool. Then, with engine standing, overflow tube is removed and oil is drained. Then overflow tube is reinstalled and transmission overfilled, engine started and excess oil drained off until oil level has reached overflow tube.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

(VAS 5051)

Adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262)

Old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) or

Drip tray (V.A.G 1306)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

The DSG oil is obtainable as a replacement part.

Requirements

Engine off

Vehicle in horizontal position, all hoist supports at same height.

Noise insulation tray removed, if equipped

Selector level at "P"

(VAS 5051) is connected

Before working, the oil temperature should not be higher than 50° Celsius.

Up to transmission production date "September 20, 2004", transmissions with two bolts were installed.

It is important not to change bolts. Only remove - A - for oil change near pendulum support

Transmissions installed after September 20, 2004, that are newer have only one bolt - A -.

- Always replace seal - arrow -.

Oil and Filter, Changing

- Follow sequence of each of the following instructions until oil change is completed.

- Connect VAS tester and identify vehicle in Guided Functions.

- Direct Shift Transmission

- Check Oil Level

Only start engine when requested to do so. Not now.

- Place drip tray (V.A.G 1306) underneath transmission.

- Connect (VW Tester) and press Check Oil Level in Guided Functions.

- Remove filter housing - arrow -.

- Before removing filter housing from transmission, tip it slightly in its seating.

This allows oil to flow back into transmission from filter housing.

- After you have inserted filter with shoulder- arrow - downward, tighten housing to 20 Nm.

- Raise vehicle.

- Remove noise insulation tray.

- Place used oil collection and extraction device (V.A.G 1782) or drip tray (V.A.G 1306) under transmission.

- Remove inspection plug near pendulum support - arrow -.

A black plastic overflow tube is located in this hole (with 8 mm hex socket head, torque specification: 3 Nm). Its length determines the oil level in the transmission.

- Remove this oil tube.

About 5 liters of oil will drain.

- Reinstall overflow tube, 3 Nm.

- Install adapter - A - from (VAS 6262) hand-tight in inspection hole.

Shake oil containers before opening.

- Fill 5.5 liter DSG oil.

To change bottles, shut-off valve can be closed or oil filler adapter (VAS 6262) can be held higher than the transmission.

- Move through (VAS 5051) until DSG oil temperature is displayed.

- Start engine.

- Press brake and shift into each selector lever position for approx. 3 seconds. Place lever in position P again.

Do not switch engine off!

With a DSG oil temperature of 35° to 45° Celsius:

- Disconnect quick-release coupling of adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262) with engine running.

- Let excess oil drain.

- As soon as oil has run out (it begins to drip), remove adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262) and install bolt with new seal.

Tightening torque: 45 Nm

- Turn engine off.

Drained oil must not be used to fill again.

Dispose of oil in an appropriate manner.

This completes changing oil and filter.

Oil level in transmission is correctly adjusted.

- Install noise insulation tray.
