Battery in Engine Compartment, Vehicles with Diesel Engine
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Spring-type clip pliers (VAS 5024A)
Removing
CAUTION!
Risk of injury. Observe warning notes and safety precautions. Refer to --> [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .
- Pull engine cover upward - arrows A - and forward - arrow B -.
- Disconnect harness connector - 1 - and loosen spring-type clamp - 2 - using (VAS 5024A).
- Disconnect vacuum hose - arrow - from air filter housing.
- Remove mounting bolt for air filter housing - arrow -.
- Release retaining tabs - arrows - and remove cover.
- Disconnect hose - arrow - from air filter housing and remove it.
- Pull off air filter housing upward out of brackets and remove it.
- Pull battery box panel upward in the - direction of the arrow - and remove.
- Remove mounting bolts - 1 - and remove retaining bracket - 2 -.
- Fold the handles - arrows - up and remove the battery.
Installing
CAUTION!
If the battery is not secured properly, the following risks are possible:
• Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage (explosion hazard).
• If the battery is not secured properly, the plates within the battery can be damaged.
• Damage to battery casing caused by bracket (possible electrolyte leakage, high subsequent costs).
• Reduced collision safety.
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- Tighten all fasteners to specified values. Refer to --> [ Battery Tightening Specifications ] [1][2]Battery.
- After installing, ensure the battery is seated properly.
- Connect the battery. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .
CAUTION!
When disconnecting and connecting the battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the Repair information. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .
