Front Side Curtain Airbag, Wagon

• Removal and installation is described for the right-hand side of the vehicle. Removal and installation for the left-hand side is performed in the same manner.

Removing

CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for working on airbags. Refer to --> [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Technician Safety Information.

- If present, open the panorama sunroof.

- Disconnect vehicle battery.

- Remove sun visors. Refer to --> [ Sun Visor ] Removal and Replacement.

- Remove roof grab handle. Refer to --> [ Roof Grab Handles ] Service and Repair.

- Remove lights and switches in headliner.

- Remove roof end strip. Refer to --> [ Roof End Strip, Wagon ] Service and Repair.

- Remove upper trim on A-pillars. Refer to --> [ Upper A-Pillar Trim ] Pillar and Side Trim.

- Remove upper trim on B-pillars. Refer to --> [ Upper B-Pillar Trim ] Pillar and Side Trim.

- Remove trim on C-pillars. Refer to --> [ C-Pillar Trim, Wagon ] Pillar and Side Trim.

- Remove trim on D-pillars. Refer to --> [ D-Pillar Trim ] Pillar and Side Trim.

CAUTION!
Perform the following work steps especially carefully in order to prevent damage to headliner.

- Lower headliner (headliner must not be removed from vehicle, front seats and front passenger side door are not removed). Refer to --> [ Molded Headliner, Wagon ] Service and Repair.

CAUTION!
Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatically discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connectors. This is done by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.

- Disconnect harness connector - 1 - from curtain airbag

- Remove bolts - 2 - (4.5 Nm).

• Bolts - 2 - must be replaced.

- Remove all side curtain airbag clips from the body.

- Remove the plugs - 3 - from the body (A-pillar).

- With a the help of a second technician, remove the side curtain airbag/igniter - 4 - from the vehicle.





Installing

To install, perform the steps used for removal in reverse order.

- Switch on ignition.

CAUTION!
Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.

- Connect vehicle battery..
