Driver Airbag
"Advanced Airbag System" (only for USA/Canada)
• "Advanced Airbag System" refers to an airbag module with two airbag stages which are deployed depending on the severity of the accident. For less severe crashes, the second stage is not deployed.
• Starting in MY 2009 the Jetta has only the passenger side front airbag is dual stage. The driver side front airbag has only a single stage igniter
CAUTION!
• Airbag modules in which only the first stage has been deployed can cause severe injuries by deployment of the second stage.
• Observe safety precautions for working on airbags. Refer to --> [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Technician Safety Information.
At this time, there is no possibility of checking whether the second stage has been deployed definitively. For this reason, such airbag modules must be returned to original packaging for proper recycling/disposal in accordance with national legislation. Direct questions to your importer!
CAUTION!
Disposal of undeployed airbag units as industrial waste/garbage is not permissible!
• Removal and installation of airbag unit is described for multifunction steering wheel.
• The screwdriver named in the following procedures should have a blade width of about 7 mm.
Removing
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for working on airbags. Refer to--> [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Technician Safety Information.
- Disconnect vehicle battery.
- Adjust steering wheel height so that it is located in the highest position.
- Adjust steering wheel depth (reach) so it is in the fully extended position.
- Turn steering wheel into the position depicted.
- Insert a screwdriver into hole on rear side of steering wheel until it stops (approx. 8 mm).

- Turn steering wheel 180° and disengage locking mechanism of airbag unit on left side of steering wheel as described.
- Turn steering wheel back 90° into center position.
- Remove airbag unit from steering wheel.
CAUTION!
Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.
- Press connector lock and disconnect connector - 1 -.
• Connector - 1 - is installed only on multi-function steering wheel.
- Release connector lock - direction of arrow - and disconnect airbag connector - 2 -.
Installing
- Check whether wiring harness - 3 - is routed as shown in the illustration.
- Insert airbag connector - 2 - into connector coupling. Airbag connector must engage audibly.
- Insert connector - 1 - into connector coupling (only in vehicles with multi-function steering wheel).
