Fuel System, Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Vehicle Diagnosis Tester, for example Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051 B)

CAUTION!
• Follow the safety precautions when working on the diesel direct injection system. Refer to --> [ Safety Precautions ] Safety Precautions.

• Observe rules for cleanliness. Refer to --> [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.

Always follow these instructions before and during work.

CAUTION!
After installing the high pressure fuel pump, it must be filled with fuel before starting the engine for the first time. Do not run the pump dry.

• Make sure no contaminants enter the fuel system when installing the high pressure fuel pump.

• Only remove the sealing plugs right before installing the fuel lines.

Conditions

• The fuel tank must be full.

Procedure

- Connect Vehicle Diagnosis Tester - 1 - as follows:





- Connect diagnostic cable - 2 - to DLC in driver footwell.

To fill the high pressure fuel pump with fuel:

- Switch on ignition.

- Select Engine Electronics in OBD.

- Then select 04-Basic Setting function.

- Enter 35 with the keypad and confirm the selection with Q.

- Then press Activate.

- The fuel pumps must run for approximately 60 seconds.

- Repeat this procedure three times to ensure the high pressure fuel pump is filled with enough fuel.

- Start engine and run at idle speed.

- After filling the fuel system, let the engine run at a moderate speed for a few minutes and then stop it.

- Check fuel system for leaks. Refer to --> [ Fuel System, Performing Leak Test ] Testing and Inspection.

- Read the ECM DTC memory and erase all DTC entries.

- Then perform a road test that is longer than 20 km and where the accelerator is pressed down completely at least one. Then check the high pressure again for leaks.

• Observe safety precautions that apply to road tests. Refer to --> [ Safety Precautions ] Safety Precautions

• If there is still air in the fuel system, the engine may switch to emergency mode during the road test. Stop the engine and erase all DTC entries.

- Read the ECM DTC memory again.
