Transmission and Engine, Separating and Assembling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Shackle (10 - 222A/12)
• Shop Crane (VAS 6100)
• Vehicles with an automatic transmission: Insert Tool 18 mm (T10179)
• Vehicles with an automatic transmission: Socket SW15 (V/175)

Separate the Transmission from the Engine:
Requirement
• Engine/transmission assembly removed and mounted to the (T10359).
- Remove the starter.
Vehicles with a Automatic Transmission and Direct Shift Gearbox
- If present, disconnect the coolant hoses from the transmission oil cooler and seal off the openings.
Vehicles with All Wheel Drive (AWD)
- Remove the bevel box.
Continuation for All
- Disconnect and free up all electrical connections from the transmission to the engine.
- Secure the transmission using (10 - 222 A /12) and the shop crane, but do not lift it.
- Remove the upper bolts connecting the engine and transmission.
Vehicles with a Manual Transmission and Direct Shift Gearbox
- Before removing the last bolts, support the transmission with the shop crane.
- Remove the lower bolts connecting the engine and transmission.
- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.
Vehicles with a Automatic Transmission
Install the bolts using (T10179). When tightening, observe the tightening specification.
The (T10035) makes the assembling easier.
- For safety, first install a bolt which is easily accessible.
- Begin with both the lower bolts.
The hole for removing the torque converter nuts is located on the back side of the engine and is covered with a rubber cap.
- Remove this cap.
- Remove the six torque converter nuts - arrow - using (V/175).
• Carefully rotate the engine further!
• When installing, be especially mindful of the engine while guiding the transmission to the engine. The starter ring gear can be held steady from the outside using a screwdriver. When installing, the stud bolts are located in the holes on the drive plate.
- Before removing the last bolt, support the transmission with the shop crane.
- Now remove the last bolt.
- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.
• Pay attention to the torque converter. It must be removed together with the transmission.
- During transport, secure the converter - arrow - from falling out, for example, with a wire - A -.
Assembling
Assembly is performed in reverse order of removal; pay attention to the tightening specifications in each repair information under Transmission, Installing.
