Automatic Transmission Oil Staining at Inspection Plug

Technical Background

For customer concerns regarding fluid staining from the transmission area, inspect the transmission oil pan's ATF inspection plug (similar to picture below).

Production Solution
Updated inspection plug was introduced into production May 29, 2009.

Service
Perform the following steps:
- Remove the sound dampening pan, if necessary.

- Check the front area of the transmission (above the barcode label) for evidence of transmission fluid.
- If staining is visible, clean the area using brake cleaner with a spray nozzle in the inspection plug area.
- Carefully remove any excess brake cleaner and ATF using low pressure shop air.
- Remove the inspection plug by carefully prying with a small screw driver between case and plug. Care must be taken to ensure inspection plug retaining tabs are not damaged during removal.
- Refill or top up fluid level as necessary, see Repair Group 37 in ElsaWeb.
- Install new inspection plug Part No. 09G325565A.
- After performing a basic test drive, check again for staining.
- If no staining is found, reinstall the sound dampening pan.
