Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling
Please observe the following notes:
• Regarding the repair information, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
• Regarding the transmission fluid, refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid ] Automatic Transmission Fluid.
• Regarding the filler tube, refer to => [ Transmissions With and Without a Filling Tube ] Transmission.
• It may be necessary to shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A)
• Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)
• Pipe Cutter (VAS 6056/2)
Shortening the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) :
- Shorten the pipe to 210 mm - a -. This assures the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) will not touch the bottom of some fluid containers.
• Dimension - a - is measured starting from the green surface on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
- Make a mark on the pipe at dimension - a -, and cut it using the pipe cutter (VAS 6056/2).
Use the transmission fluid available as a replacement part. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
- When checking the transmission fluid level, always replace the seal - arrow - on the plug.
Checking
- Turn off the engine.
The transmission fluid temperature must not be more than approximately 30 °C (86 °F) at the start of the test.
• The transmission is not in emergency running mode, and the fluid temperature is not higher than 30 °C (86 °F).
• The vehicle is horizontal
• The selector level is in the "P" position.
- Connect the tester and move through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, Connecting ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.
- Press the right button Guided Functions.
- Select the vehicle, the transmission and check ATF level.
- Press the -> button.
- Start the engine.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Place a drip tray under the transmission.
- Press the -> button.
If the test temperature is 35 to 45 °C (95 to 113 °F)
- Remove the plug from the oil pan.
The fluid flows out of the overflow tube.
If fluid continues to drip out of hole
The fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Install and tighten the plug with a new seal to 27 Nm. The level check is now completed.
If no fluid drips out of the hole
- Fill with transmission fluid.
Filling
- Install the adapter for oil filling VAS 6291/2 (VAS 6262/2) into the oil pan hole, hand tight while the engine is running.
- Shake the bottles before opening.
- Read the information regarding the pipe before attaching the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the fluid container.
- Fill with 1 liter fluid.
- Connect the oil filler adapter (VAS 6262) to the quick release coupling and check:
If fluid lows out of the hole
The fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it drips.
- Install and tighten the plug with a new seal to 27 Nm. The fluid level check is now completed.
If the fluid does not drip
- Fill with another liter of fluid.
Too little or too much transmission fluid will impair the transmission. If 2 liters are missing, you should check the transmission more closely. There is probably a larger leak.
