Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair






Multifunction Transmission Range Switch F125

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Move the selector lever into the "N" position.

- Turn off the ignition.

6 Cylinder Gas Vehicles

- Remove the coolant expansion tank.

- Connect the battery ground cable.

Continuation for All

- Disconnect the selector lever cable - 1 - from the cable bracket - 2 - and remove it.






Be careful not to bend the cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise the tabs on the cable bracket may break off.

- Pry the cable - 1 - off the selector shaft lever - 3 - using a open end wrench - 2 -.






- Disconnect the connector from the multifunction transmission range switch.

- Remove the nut - 1 -.






- Remove the spring washer - 2 - and the selector shaft lever - 3 - from the selector shaft - 4 -.

- Bend back the hooks on the lock washer - 2 - using a screwdriver.






- Replace the lock washer, if the hooks are broken.

- Remove the nut - 1 -.

- Remove the bolts - 5 -.

- Remove the multifunction switch - 4 - and washers - 2 and 3 - from the selector shaft - 6 -.

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

- Install the multifunction switch - 4 - to the selector shaft - 6 -.






- Install the multifunction switch bolts - 5 - hand tight.

- Install the washers - 2 and 3 - onto the selector shaft - 6 -.

- Install the washer - 2 - with the hooks facing up.

- Install the washer - 2 - with the long narrow guide into the long narrow depression in the selector shaft - 6 -.

- Install and tighten the nut - 1 - to 7 Nm.

- Secure the nut - 1 - by bending the hooks on the lock washer downward - 2 -.

- Replace the lock washer, if the hooks are broken.

- Install the selector lever - 3 - onto the selector shaft - 4 -.






- Move the selector lever - 3 - into the "P" position. This means, push the selector lever - 3 - opposite the direction of travel until it stops.

- Move the selector lever - 3 - into the "N" position. Push the lever - 3 - two positions forward in the direction of travel.

- Install the spring washer - 2 - and the nut - 1 - onto the selector shaft - 4 -.

- Tighten the nut - 1 - to 13 Nm.

6 Cylinder Gas Vehicles

- Install the coolant expansion tank.

- Connect the battery ground cable.

Continuation for All
