Vehicle Information
Condition
Key Replacement, Vehicle Theft System Identity Guidelines
Customer loses key and is concerned about potential vehicle theft.
Technical Background
6th generation Passat introduced a new style key that DOES NOT use an ignition lock cylinder when compared to other VW models. The "Push In" key instead is "mated" with the immobilizer system which is part of the Comfort Convenience Module (J393). The "mating" is called an Identity.
The following statements are true regarding an Identity:
^ Ordering single replacement keys WILL retain the same vehicle Identity.
^ Ordering a complete lock set WILL create a new Identity.
^ Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (ESCL) -J764- and Comfort System Central Control Module -J393- MUST be replaced when changing an identity.
^ Ordering a single lock cylinder WILL NOT require a new Identity. The vehicle WILL retain the current assigned key code.
^ Losing all keys WILL NOT necessitate an Identity replacement. Re-order replacement key by VIN.
An Identity is unique to a vehicle VIN structure. An Identity is changed when ordering Part No. 3C5 800 375 + index. This "kit" contains 2 transmitters, 2 valet keys and the necessary lock cylinders.
Replacing a Vehicle Theft System Identity is very similar to an Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (ESCL) -J764- and Comfort System Central Control Module -J393- replacement, see Technical Bulletin Instance Number 2016689. The difference is the lock cylinders will be replaced during an identity replacement.
Tip:
In order to avoid a lost valet key being used to enter the vehicle, the Identity MUST be replaced. The valet key CANNOT be used to start the vehicle.
Production Solution
No production change required.
Service
NOTE:
Prior to launching VAS-PC application and starting Key Adaption process, confirm tester screen saver and power settings in accordance with Special Tools and Equipment - Service Information Document # VSE-08-18. Failure to do so may result in the tester entering power save mode during data transfer, and subsequent control module failure.
To avoid unnecessary customer parts and labor costs when replacing a vehicle Identity:
^ Order number of keys the customer would like to replace.
^ Before beginning adapting procedure, have all vehicle keys present.
Tip:
Failure to have all existing keys present will result in un-adapted keys becoming inoperative until adapting procedure is performed.
^ Connect VAS 5051/5052.
^ Select Guided Fault Finding, Proceed to Chassis, Electrical System (Repair Group 01; 90 to 97), 01 - Systems capable of self-diagnosis, Immobilizer, Ignition key adaptation.
^ Once adaptation is complete, verify vehicle starts with each key adapted.
^ Adapt radio-remote(s), see Repair Manual Group 57 Front Door, Central Locking System, Remote Control Keys Adapting in Elsaweb.
^ Verify all radio-remote functionality is operative. Keys adapted at this time are the only keys able to operate vehicle, rendering lost keys inoperative.
^ Exit GFF
