Brake Caliper

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (VAG 1331)

Brake pedal actuator (VAG 1869/2)

Removing

Procedure applies only for replacing or performing subsequent service work on the brake caliper.

- Remove the wheels.

- Pry the brake caliper retaining spring out of the brake pad retaining spring with a screwdriver. To do this, place screwdriver between both retaining springs.

- Secure the brake caliper retaining spring with a cloth when doing this so that it cannot fly away.

- Disconnect the connector for the brake pad wear indicator.

- Connect the bleeder hose for the bleeder bottle to the bleeder valve of the brake caliper and then open the bleeder valve.

- Install the brake pedal actuator (VAG 1869/2).

- Close the bleeder valve and remove the bleeder bottle.

- Remove the brake hose.

- Pull both cover caps from the bushings of the brake caliper.

- Loosen both guide pins and remove them from the brake caliper.

- Pull off the brake caliper from the brake carrier.

- Remove the brake pads from the brake caliper.

Installing

Piston is pressed back into caliper.

- Insert the inner brake pad with retaining spring in the brake caliper.

- Set the outer brake pad with retaining spring into the brake caliper.

- Place the brake caliper with brake pads onto the brake carrier.

- Tighten the brake caliper to the brake carrier using both guide pins.

- Install both protective caps.

- Connect the brake hose to the brake caliper.

- Remove the brake pedal actuator (VAG 1869/2).

- Insert the brake caliper retaining spring to the brake pad retaining spring and press under brake carrier.

- Connect the brake pad wear indicator connector.

- Bleed the brake system. Refer to => [ Brake System Bleeding General Information ] Brake System Bleeding General Information.

- Install the wheels.

Tightening specification for wheel bolts.

Before moving the vehicle, press the brake pedal firmly several times to properly seat the brake pads in their normal operating position.

Check the brake fluid level.
